Monstera dubia is a rare and lesser-known variety of Monstera compared to the popular Monstera deliciosa and Monstera adansonii, but its stunning variegation and intriguing growth pattern make it a desirable addition to any houseplant collection. In its tropical Central and South American habitat, Monstera dubia grows as a creeping vine that climbs trees and large plants. Juvenile plants feature small, heart-shaped leaves with light and dark green variegation, lying flat against the surface they are growing on. Monstera dubias grow under forest canopy in their natural habitat, receiving dappled sunlight daily. Indoors, they should be placed in bright indirect light, but not exposed to prolonged direct sunlight, as this may damage the leaves of young plants. To thrive, Monstera dubias require a potting mix that is loose, moist, and well-draining, with a high amount of organic matter. The best soil for these tropical plants is a chunky aroid mix, which can be made by combining equal parts of orchid bark, peat moss or coco coir, and perlite.
