Worthy Succesor to the Original Okami

The second outing of the Okami series finds new life in the DS with Okamiden, a game that puts you in the role of the young god Chibiterasu, son of Amaterasu (affectionately known to many as Ammy), protagonist of the first game. It all starts after nine months have passed since the events of the original Okami. Once more, evil has spread across the peaceful land of Nippon and once more, the nature spirit Sakuya attempts to summon Amaterasu to save the day again. But she gets a bit more than she bargained for when the playful and less powerful Chibiterasu appears instead of Ammy. Nevertheless, Chibi is ready to save the day with the power of the Celestial Brush and those that would aid him in his quest, each with their own unique abilities to aid the Child of the Sun in his quest. The story is light and cheerful, though it can get quite teary at times, which is alright as it adds more immersion and really makes you feel for the characters. And both graphics and music are top notch as well, complimenting the Ancient Japan-esque theme of the adventure quite well. Granted, the DS couldn't FULLY illustrate the beauty of the original Okami like it was shown back on PS2 and the Wii, but it still does a good job here. As for gameplay, Okamiden is much like a Legend of Zelda-esque adventure where you journey from place to place, exploring dungeons and what have you in order to aid people in need. It shys away from Zelda, though, with the Celestial Brush, which finally fits perfectly with the DS. At any time during gameplay or combat, you can freeze time momentarily and draw with the touch screen to provide a myriad of special effects, such as cutting things away from the environment, directing your partner to a faraway objective, or controlling the very elements themselves. All in all, if you were a fan of the original Okami, you'll love this game. And if you didn't play the original Okami, that's alright too; this game provides enough backstory in acquireable history scrolls that you shouldn't be missing too much by playing Okamiden first. Pretty much, it's definitely a great game, and has more than earned a permanent spot in my collection.
