Italy, May 1860. Edoardo and Giovanni - a middle class young man from Turin and an aristocrat from Palermo - embark on a steamer to follow General Garibaldi, going to conquer Sicily. They don't know if they'll survive and, above all, they don't know that they are destined to love each other passionately, against all the rules of their time. The plot follows step by step the Expedition of the Thousand, on the basis of the historical sources and particularly of the written memories of those who took part in it. A love story, a war story, but with a touch of magic: what is the aim of certain Irish elves and the mysterious domestic sprite who follow the protagonists? Who is the fake friar, intent on murdering Garibaldi, and who has sent him? And, finally, how would the leader of the expedition have reacted on discovering that among his volunteers there were two sodomites (as they were called then) in red shirts? Brave warriors, none the less, from Calatafimi to the Volturno.
Laura Radiconcini Writes fantasy stories, because that is her passion, but historical novels too, supported by very accurate research. Her passion then moved to LGBTQ plots and Two in a Thousand was written. She wanted a love story between two warriors, but set in a historical and Italian context. Garibaldi's epic seemed to be the right choice
