Larger than if you purchased a similar item as a planter and a "planter" this size would cost more. It's sturdy and with cover on, it's attractive for winter plus protects your soil. A very attractive item to place anywhere around your home. Mine is actually right in front so it's super easy to get to. It's going to be a one tomato plant holder in the spring. It holds about 2 large bags of soil only so soil won't cost a fortune, maybe $20. depending on grade you purchase. You do have to put drainage holes in bottom if you want it for a planter
