The underside and basin exterior are unglazed/unfinished but coated with a matte white protective sealant that prevents moisture absorption and staining. Solid ceramic pieces cannot be glazed on all sides due to the nature of the ceramic material, as a minimum surface area must remain raw during the glaze firing process to prevent explosions.
