I bought another kind last year,that had stretchy cords.They were a little bit less expensive but when I was fitting them over my boot,they broke on the first try.These have solid rubber pieces and actual spikes.They are safe outside and you don't slide around inside.

I really didn't expect these to work, but after I fell on what is a very shiny 1/2-inch glaze of ice on snow 2 days ago, I was skeptical. But you know what? these work better than I expected. I didn't slip once even though I watched birds slipping on the ice trying to get bird seed. very slippery outside but these did the trick. The only thing that I recommend is that once you get them on your shoes, which is a little difficult, leave them on so that you don't have to take them on and off all the time. The other thing to consider is to put them on outdoors where you will not damage wood floors or decks.
