In Spring, River Birch trees flush out green leaves that turn yellow in the fall and their peeling bark provides a beautiful compliment to the color Fall brings. They can be planted in wet, low lying areas and are a great addition to large spaces. To plant, dig a hole twice the width of the container and as deep as the root ball. Set the tree in the hole and fill with soil. Pat firm. Water deeply after planting and keep evenly moist until established. Mulch if extra water retention is needed. Do not fertilize the first year. After the first year, only fertilize as needed in early Spring.
