Mark Lowery - Mark Lowry on Broadway - Music & Performance - CD
Key item features
Broadway will never be the same! Hold on to your hat folks! Mark Lowry has taken on Broadway and they're still rolling in the aisles.
If he looks familiar to you it's probably due to his long-standing membership with the Gaither Vocal Band or possibly it's the multitude of videos, CDs, books, t-shirts all bearing Lowry's name and goofy grin. His latest smash hit, Mark Lowry On Broadway, shows his fans that he's still got the comical edge this singer/comedian/songwriter is known for.
This latest release from Spring House Productions is a compilation of comedy, song, music and Christian message with Mark Lowry playing the Broadway lead, along with supporting roles performed by other well known artists. Sandi Patty, David Phelps, Anthony Burger, Bill Gaither, Beverly Lowry and the Gaither Vocal Band join the talented Mr. Lowry in New York during this live recording.
As you listen to Mark Lowry On Broadway you'll wonder whether it's the humor or the sensational songs that's bringing the tears to your eyes. In the comedy "Old Age Hair" Lowry laments being 41 years old. He has the audience in stitches as he shoots the breeze about hair, the lack of it on his head and the abundance of it in other areas: "When you're thirty you get your first nose hair. At first it's just a branchling. It's no big deal. You pluck it and keep moving. You hit forty ... those are tree trunks hanging out your nose. And every nerve in your body is connected to them. You pull one of those; your leg will jerk. They'll make you cry like you're watching a Gaither video. I plucked one the other day, and I cried like Tammy Faye at a yard sale."
Smattered throughout the album is Lowry's renditions of famous Broadway tunes. In "I Cannot Dance Tonight (Because I'm Southern Baptist)" Lowry belts out this show-tune in true Broadway style, adding some of his own comical style for good measure: "I cannot dance tonight or any other night, because I'm southern Baptist. I cannot bust a groove, there's little I can move, because I'm southern Baptist."
Even through all the sidesplitting humor, a message of faith in God and His amazing grace emerges as Lowry enchants the audience with song. The evening and the album ends with "Mary, Did You Know?" ï¾– a heart tugging song featuring Mark Lowry with Guy Penrod and David Phelps. Written by Lowry himself, the song expresses his desire to know if Jesus' mother, Mary, knew how her Son would save the world. The song builds to a crescendo when the trio sings: "The blind will see/the deaf will hear/and the dead will live again/the lame will leap/the dumb will speak/the praises of the Lamb."
A spectacular finish to an equally impressive evening of entertainment. 1+1=2 Thumbs-Up!
