Duke Ellington was and remains one of America's greatest musical figures. Bandleader, pianist, composer--of songs, soundtracks and symphonic works--the Duke wore many hats and wore them with class and style from the moment that he came upon the jazz scene in the '20s. Ellington always maintained that his "instrument" was the orchestra, as he wrote to the specific strengths of his band members, and achieved a sound like no other.

This collection consists of the material Ellington recorded for the Capitol, Roulette, and United Artists labels in the early '50s and '60s. While the early '50s were not the Duke and company's peak years (featured soloist Johnny Hodges had, for a time, left the band, and that era was not very hospitable to big bands), he produced some fine, enjoyable music that more than stands the test of time. Highlights include the hit "Satin Doll"; "I Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good)," recorded with Louis Armstrong; and four trio tracks, which highlight the gentle flair of Ellington's emotive piano. Two of these trio pieces feature jazz legends Charles Mingus (bass) and Max Roach (drums), including the sublime "Fleurette Africaine." LEGENDS is a fine introduction to the legend of the Duke.
