In 1996 Paolo won the Vina del Mar International Song Festival held in Chile with the song "Aria, Ario." In 1997, the success of the song prompted the release of his debut album, Por Amor. In 2003 he released the single "Vero Falso" and the album Lei e that went both gold (with 50,000 copies sold) and double platinum (200,000 copies sold) by October of that year. In 2005 Favola (Fable) achieved Platinum status and sold more that 200,000 copies. Paolo participated in the Festival de Sanremo 2007, with the song "Music," it has achieved both tremendous popularity and the approval of Pippo Baudo and has come to define The Manifest of the Festival de Sanremo. Paolo is now representing his home country Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 taking place in Belgrade, Serbia. He will compete with the pop ballad "Era Stupendo" and will take part in the second semifinal of the contest on Thursday, May 22, 2008, competing against 18 other countries vying for one of 10 spots in the final on Saturday the 24th. These 10 songs will join the other 10 qualifiers from the fist semifinal, and 5 songs pre-qualified for the final. Paolo participated in the Sanremo Music Festival 2008, performing the song "Grande."
