Help! I'm Melting...

The original trunk hatch liftgate switch release button cover was literally melting from the heat and humidity here in Florida. It took considerable effort to scrape the goo off the liftgate switch-plate and removing the two retaining screws/washers. However, once accomplished the new rubber cover and replacement screws installed in a jiffy. The new cover is a thick pad that provides ample protection from moisture, dirt, and grime from getting into and disrupting the hatch liftgate switch. Most satisfying is that I can now press my fingers upon the cover without them coming away all sticky and covered with what looked like tar. Yuck! To say I am very satisfied does not fully express how relieved I am to have this repair behind me. Best part of all is that Parts Geek saved me nearly 40% of what the dealership wanted if they ordered the part...and another dealership tried to convince me I needed a whole new switch that would have cost me 4-times the cost of the cover alone.

Final result: good

It was very hard to clean up the old rubbery mess from the previous trunk hatch. What happened at Lexus to allow this stupid problem to occur in the first place? It was also kind of difficult to deal with the tiny screws to make the replacement. But once done, it works fine. Nice to finally get the liftgate up without black rubber all over my hands.

Not an easy job

The replacement cover is great. It beats replacing the entire switch. The material that Toyota uses on the cover melts into the mechanism requiring an effort to remove this mess. I recommend you do this.
