About human papillomavirus (HPV)

What is HPV?
There are more than 150 versions of the virus. Some cause infection of the skin & others infect various mucous membranes. Different types of HPV affect the body differently. Some can lead to cancer of the tongue, tonsils, anus, cervix, vulva & penis, while others cause warts in the genital area.
What is the HPV vaccine?
The vaccine is given in 2 or 3 doses, depending on age, to protect against HPV infections that can lead to cancer. It's most effective in people 26 or younger, though adults 27-45 can receive it if advised by their healthcare provider. Learn more at https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/hpv/index.html.
