When you're choosing outdoor curtains, begin by measuring the space you want to cover. Put the curtain rod in place, and then measure from the top edge of the rod to the ground. This gives you the length of the curtain panels you need if you're considering tab pocket panels. If you're looking at panels with rod pockets, you need to add about an inch to the length to accommodate the seam above the rod pocket.

When measuring the width of the opening in a gazebo for patio curtains, measure from post to post. If you're measuring for panels to cover a doorway, such as for patio door curtains, measure 4 or 5 inches beyond the frame to provide stack-back space when the outdoor patio curtains are open. Stack-back space provides room to push the curtain away from the door opening.
