What is the best way to take care of a traditional beer stein?

For general cleaning, a soft cloth or dusting wand will safely remove external dust and dirt. For removal of grime or washing after use, a mild dish soap with warm water will effectively and safely clean your stein. To prevent water marks, dry with a soft cloth immediately after washing. Harsh chemicals and detergents may cause damage to the stein. Traditional steins are not generally dishwasher safe.

Are beer steins only for decoration?

While they are popular for collecting and displaying, beer steins function as a drinking vessel as well. If drinking from a traditional stein, avoid filling them with corrosive beverages like soda, pineapple juice, or tomato juice to prevent causing damage to the pewter lid. After using your stein for the consumption of liquids, be sure to thoroughly clean it to keep it in good condition.

Can I drink from a beer stein that contains pewter?

Modern pewter is lead-free and can safely be used to consume food and drinks. The modern version contains tin, copper, and antimony. If you come across an antique pewter stein and are unsure if it contains lead, use a lead test kit to verify its safety. Any level of lead in a drinking vessel is unsafe to use for consumption.
