Capacity: Check the capacity, such as 30 or 50 pints. This reflects how much water is removed from the air during a 24-hour period by the dehumidifier. Go for a larger capacity to dry the basement faster and for less frequent emptying of the tank.

Desiccant vs. refrigerant: For a basement that's usually colder than 50 degrees Fahrenheit, you need a desiccant dehumidifier, which uses an adsorption process to remove the moisture. For warmer basements, refrigerant dehumidifiers work better.

Extra features: A continuous drain setting ensures the water is constantly removed. Set a specific level of humidity using a built-in hygrometer. In low temperatures, defrost features prevent the coils from freezing.
