The type of curling iron or wand you purchase should depend on the type of hair you have and the type of style you want to create. Short hair should use a curling iron or wand that has a barrel no wider than 1 inch. The longer your hair, the wider the barrel you should use.

If it's tight curls you desire, a curling iron will benefit you more than a curling wand, which is better at creating loose beachy waves. Titanium and gold-plated curling irons and wands create the most heat, and you should only use them with thick coarse hair.

Tourmaline wands and curling irons are ideal for fine hair because they heat evenly but don't produce heat as intense as gold. Check the heat settings available on the styling tools. Coarse hair requires a heat setting between 350 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
