Benzoyl peroxide is a proven acne-fighter that not only targets and removes active pimples but can help stop them from coming back. Your skin will take some time to adjust to the formula, so when you begin using this treatment, use only a small amount, forming a very thin layer over problem areas. Do not use it where it's not needed, as this will only irritate your skin unnecessarily.

For mild cases of acne and rare breakouts, choose a facial cleanser with a low percentage of benzoyl peroxide, around 2.5 percent. For moderate and severe acne, you can work your way up to a stronger ointment that contains about 10 percent of the active ingredient if your skin can tolerate it. Choose lower concentrations for your face, around 4 percent, since this skin is more sensitive than your back or chest.
