One of the choices you'll have to make when picking out your first car seat is whether to buy an infant car seat or a convertible car seat. Infant car seats are rear facing and designed for infants only. If you choose this option, you'll have to switch your child to a forward-facing toddler seat when they reach the original seat's height and weight limits. Convertible car seats can be positioned to face the rear of the car for infants and can then be turned to face forward for toddlers. An advantage of infant car seats is that they're often compatible with travel systems, which are convenient options that allow your car seat to be attached to a stroller chassis.

Once your child outgrows their car seat, they'll need to switch to an appropriately sized booster seat. It's recommended that your child remain in a booster seat until they're at least 57 inches, usually between the ages of 8 and 12.
