Engine compression readings vary depending on the vehicle, but generally, a healthy compression reading ranges between 120 and 160 psi for most gasoline engines. To interpret your results:

• Consistent readings: All cylinders should have similar compression values within about 10-15% of each other.
• Low readings: Values significantly below the manufacturer's specification or below 90 psi may indicate engine problems.
• High readings: Extremely high compression can also signal issues like carbon buildup.

When performing a compression test, it's important to remove all spark plugs. This allows the engine to turn over freely without compression resistance from other cylinders, giving you accurate pressure readings for each cylinder. Removing all spark plugs also prevents the engine from starting during the test, which ensures safety. After removing the plugs, disable the ignition system to avoid accidental sparks. This preparation helps the compression tester provide reliable results for diagnosing engine health.

A compression tester measures the pressure inside each engine cylinder during the compression stroke. This information helps identify:

• Worn piston rings: Low compression can indicate ring wear or damage.
• Leaking valves: Valves that don't seal properly cause pressure loss.
• Head gasket issues: A blown head gasket may cause uneven compression readings.
• Overall engine health: Consistent compression across cylinders suggests good engine condition.

Using a compression tester is a valuable diagnostic step before costly repairs.

During a compression test, it's typical to crank the engine about 4 to 6 times for each cylinder being tested. This allows the gauge to reach its maximum pressure reading. Make sure to keep the throttle fully open while cranking to let air flow freely into the cylinder. After cranking, note the highest pressure displayed on the gauge. If the pressure doesn't build up after several cranks, it could indicate an engine problem such as a leak or worn components.

Compression testers and leak-down testers both assess engine cylinder condition but in different ways:

• Compression tester: Measures the maximum pressure generated during the engine's compression stroke. It's quick and useful for general engine health checks.
• Leak-down tester: Applies compressed air into the cylinder at top dead center and measures how much air leaks out. It helps pinpoint the exact source of leaks, such as valves, piston rings, or head gaskets.

Leak-down tests are more detailed but take longer, while compression tests are simpler and faster for routine diagnostics.
