Where many of their peers get stuck in a 2/4 rut, the Vidalias move easily from boogie to ballad to barnburner without missing a beat. Bandleader Charles Walston's rough, weathered voice lends an edge to even the most sentimental songs, enabling him to pull off a barroom weeper like "What A Nice Surprise" (which features a guest appearance by Indigo Girl Amy Ray) without descending into bathos.<BR>The Vidalias employ twang and reverb the way a gourmet chef seasons a rich sauce, adding just the right touch to bring out the flavor that's already inherent in their songs. Walston proves himself to be a sharp songwriter, occasionally bringing to mind Dave Alvin, as on the dark, vengeful "Whose Side Are You On," which begs a favorable comparison to late-period Blasters. The Vidalias get bonus points for having enough smarts to make the most of the early Ramones gem "Questioningly" in a countrified cover version. $6.92
