Yes, you can keep your old number but it&#39;ll cost you $10.00. Don&#39;t cancel the service with your old number until you&#39;re ready to install the MagicJack. You do it online on the MagicJack website.

After you set up MagicJack with a temporary phone number, you can request that your old number be transferred to your MagicJack service. You should not cancel your old service before the transfer is made.

Magic Jack says they charge $10 to port your existing number over, but there&#39;s a hidden one-time &quot;number change&quot; charge they tack on. Go figure. Still worth the cost. Had our Magic Jack Go active for over 2 months and it works fine.

Hubby bought his several years ago.  Every year upon renewal, he is charged an ADDITIONAL $10.00 a month for keeping his number.  This is on top of the regular renewal feel.

MJ charged $ 21. 57 to transfer but unsuccessful. I chatted with MJ customer service many times, also can not help and figure out that issues.

I have been using it in my business for years, works fine as a fax, and also works as a data line for credit card transactions. Only problem is it freezes every few weeks and needs to be reset. Solved this problem by adding a timer to the to the power supply, shuts down for 1/2 hr at 1 am, resets every day, no problems since I started doing this. The USB power adapter does fail after 2 years, so have a spare handy.

Yes, you can do anything over Magic Jack that you could over a landline. Fax is easy, voice is more difficult and they seem to have voice down.

I have determined that you can use a fax with it, but i could not find if you could directly plug it into the machine.

I&#39;ve been able to fax, but sometimes it takes a couple tries to go through. You might need to set a lower data rate on the fax machine.

I bought the MagicJack after hearing from a few friends that they can't tell the difference between a regular land line and the MagicJack. Although you still need the internet to be able to make calls (wifi), the new technology doesn't require it to be connected to a computer anymore in your home. The base phone is plugged into my modem and an outlet and the rest of the phones in the house are simply plugged into a power outlet and they all ring! Oh and you can receive your voicemails as an audio file through your email. If you have an iPhone, there is an ap to set up your MagicJack number to ring to your mobile phone. There are so many cool features but here's the greatest thing.... instead of paying $45 per month for my land line, I am now going to be paying $45 per YEAR for this MagicJack. The initial price (approx $80) includes the MagicJack and one year of service. You then have to pay an extra $10 when you sign up (to get a Canadian number). After the first year the annual cost will be $35 for the service and $10 for the Canadian number. It will cost even less than that if you sign up for their 5 year plan. Highly recommended.

Cost-wise, it's a FANTASTIC bargain.  $35 for the first YEAR. Renewal might run a bit more but still a great bargain. I use it mostly for faxing. Compared to even online fax services, this is DIRT CHEAP.  The cheapest online service I found was $12 a MONTH. 
  
The original setup AND registering took less than 10 minutes. resetting my fax to work with this took a bit longer with a visit to Support services for my printer.

I am attaching the process I used and a second option (hard reset) if the first attempt doesn't work.  I have an HP C309a...your results may vary ;)

I have the app set to use my home number so when someone calls my home number it also rings on my mobile phone and tablet as long as they are connected to WiFi.

Many tablet/ipod touch owners are unaware they can use their device as a free WiFi phone.It works like a speaker phone and if you want a private conversation,just plug in earbuds/headphones as the mic will still pick up your voice.No special headset needed.I prefer to have longer conversations on my tablet with lightweight headphones as it is more comfortable as well as the microphone and speakers having better sound quality than a cellphone or cordless home phone.

I use prepaid minutes on a tracfone android mobile phone for rare occasions when I am away from home and don't have access to a WiFi connection.My total phone bill for all phone services comes out to about $10 a month(magicjack and magicjack app for $3 a month and tracfone with minimal minutes for $7 a month).The more I use the magicjack app over WiFi,the more tracfone minutes I save as any unused tracfone minutes carry over when I add a $20 tracfone card every 3 months.Both magicjack and tracfone service have worked well for me for several years.

I've used MJ and MJ+ for years now. They are by far the cheapest way to make voice call on the planet - less than $2 a month, which includes the cost of the physical unit, on a five-year plan. You can also FAX over the MJ connection.. And they will work anywhere on the planet. The 5-yr plan also gives you a 5-year warranty on the device.

MJ (plain version) is being retired, and if you allow your service time to run out, you will not be able to reactivate it. The plain version requires a computer, and that the computer be on.

The current version are the MJ+ and the MJgo. Both can work off a computer, or be plugged directly into router hub. If you already have a MJ+, then the ONLY reason to upgrade to the new MJgo is for the conference call capability, because otherwise they are the same.

If you are new to MagicJack, then get the MJgo

I have three active MJ+ plugged into router hubs on ether net cable -- so you can run multiple MJ's off your network. You can also run a 2-line or 4-line phone off the MJ+ or MJgo. The MJ+ and MJgo will also work plugged into a wireless hub. I used to plug into my PC, but it runs under the now unsupported XP OS, and I have to reboot it a few times a day, so it is unreliable.

Once in a while I do have to reboot a MJ+'s when the dial tone is lost. But that could also be the digital phone plugged into it. I usually just cut the power to the phone, and the dial tone reappears when I restore power. But sometimes I have to pull out the MJ+ and reinsert it.

I also have MJ app for smart-phones or tablets. It works over WiFi or Data connection. I have a WiFi-only tablet, and I have made and received voice calls using the MJapp.

Both the physical device and the app can be used worldwide. All you have to do is find a broadband or DSL connection anywhere in the world. Many overseas call centers use MagicJack to serve clients in the US and Canada.

Lowest cost voice calling on the planet

This is the absolute best buy I have done all year. My phone works great, no problems with any calls in or out. Very easy to install and any problems MagicJack has a chat line with extremely knowledgeable CSR who will walk you through it.

meets my expectations. I am able to make and receive phone calls at a great price of $35/year. I did not encounter any problems to install my new majicJack GO.  Great product.

I have this dingle even though I suspect I could have hung on to MJ-Plus-2012 which I'd used for 2 years along with DSL, until 2017 when I switched to Optimum Cable, at which time I decided to switch to GO along with Cable. Frankly, MJ-Plus-2012 may have been just as good if not better than GO. (Not that I'm a tech expert, but still..)

...Note I'm rating this higher to balance any1 star reviews, because both myself and many others need MJ for budget reasons.

That said, here are the drawbacks:

(1) The MJ adapter is BAD. Everyone agrees on that. Unfortunately, if you wish to keep several spares handy, it's getting harder and harder to find affordable good-quality single-USB adapters these days.

(2) Customer support is WORSE THAN BAD. For example, a chat agent had erroneously removed my MJ phone number from the Account dropdown during a Remote session when attempting to scout out issues. That entailed hours of hassle with a subsequent chat-agent, and agonizing whether it would indeed get successfully reinstated. Somewhat like roulette. Yet another chat-agent set my router wrong, which I suspected, and therefore I asked the next agent to check it out. Sure enough, my suspcions had proved correct, as confirmed by the latter agent. ALWAYS be vigilant with them, because after countless hours I endured with zillions of their agents, i've found maybe one-percent to be somewhat knowledgeable. And that goes even for one of the agents empowered to make outbound calls! Though granted, one or two of them was pretty smart, and likewise re: the Level-3 agents.
Update:
Today, yet another MJ agent (a senior one whom i asked to be summoned) was horrific. As usual, it dragged out HOURS. She couldn't offer clear basic instructions for a basic procedure (setting up prepaid international) wherein all the textboxes and info are VERY unclear. I kept requesting she type the precise steps I need to do. I even gave her MY OWN EXAMPLES of how to convey clear instructions. But despite my efforts, she responded with generalities, as a three-year old might do. So there's practically no diff. between junior or senior agents!!! For example, when I asked "do i need to click the button near my name & ship-address even though Prepaid-minutes aren't being shipped to me" she responded "please click the button near your name it bill bring you the billing info". That was NOT true. All it did was color-in the button! A mature person would have actually answered to the point, as well as providing an ACCURATE response as follows: Click the button which says CONTINUE-TO-BILLING-INFO. But that's only a drop in the bucket. You need to see their moronic interface. You also needed to be here to understand the DRAGGED-OUT-WAIT-TIMES until the NonSupport agents get around to responding to nearly EVERYTHING.
Whichever careless creature(s) are responsible for programming their entire procedure and designing their web pages ought to be prosecuted by all of us for our premature white hair. Literally.

(3) I need to occasionally reset the device by unplugging it - due to disconnects coupled with error messages such as "Error 23". Thus, the GO model is no different than MJ-Plus-2012 in that respect, despite their touting GO as the most superior of all. (more like marketing hype) The error-message happened today when my computer was on, so maybe it's less likely to happen when my computer is turned off.

(4) Will not operate with Linux, or so i'm told.

(5) Inaccurate instructions - such as stating that it will work with a splitter. That was NOT the case with me.

(6) yet more inaccurate instructions - by not advising people (and the MJ chat-agents) that with DSL, you don't need an "official" router, but rather you can use a simple cheap Switch which can be programmed by your ISP as a router a/k/a "gateway"

(7) MJ chat-agents never told to advise people that when switching from DSL to Cable (or from one ISP to another??) you need to make sure that your DSL line is totally disconnected at point of entry. Otherwise, there will be interference, and incoming phone calls will not work properly if at all.

(8) For those EMF-sensitives who prefer wired-phones:

The MJ chat-agents fail to advise people that YOU CAN OFTEN have up to THREE house phones connected to the MJ line.
Here's how I did it:
I have three 1980s phones, each with a REN value of 1.0.
I turned my bedroom ringer OFF.
The kitchen ringer is OFF too.
The computer-room ringer is HIGH.

By doing these steps, it enabled my answering machine recording to kick in after 5 rings, instead of after many rings (or not kicking in at all).
I also UNPLUG my fax-phone except when I need to use it.

I use MJ & three 1980s panasonics  at 1.0 REN each

Pros:
A lot cheaper than phone line provided by phone service provider like Bell or Videotron. You pay for this device (70$ CA at the time of purchase and you have free service for 1 year) + 10$ US for Canadian phone number for 1 year + 35$ US for a year of service (1st year included with the purchase of the device).
There are plans like 100$ US for 5 years of service, then you have to pay 10$ US / year for the phone number.
The sound quality is perfect when you power this device directly from the wall and with a network cable attach to your network switch.

They do not have phone customer service, they only have Live Chat, but you talk to support almost instantly. Which is pretty rare with standard phone line provider.

With MagicJack you have an easy VOIP bundle kit, you buy it, create an account, link your device to your account, pay for the Canadian phone number, that's it, you have a home phone. It's a very good product if you want to lower your telecom bill; if you want perfect liability pay 50$/month for a Bell line.

Con:
Sometimes the line cut when you try to answer, not frequently but enough to notice it's not perfect. The sound quality is a lot less good when you use the device plugged in a computer. Canadian phone number are not portable to MagicJack, so you have to change your phone number.

Summary:
There are alternative, but they're not as cheap or as easy:
2 alternative I know: Ooma and VOIP.ms
Ooma: it's 4$/month + their device (Ooma Telo) that are generally 120$. But a lot of Canadian Numbers are portable to their service, and from what I've heard it's an easy setup.

VOIP.ms: depending on where you are and which billing plans you chose and how much you use the line it can be a lot cheaper than MagicJack, but you have to buy an ATA, configure it to connect it to your VOIP.ms account, for "normal" people it's not as easy as magicjack is. But a lot of Canadian Number are portable to their service.

Note that all VOIP solution use the internet, so nothing is as liable than a Bell land line.

Good and easy alternative to home phone line

I bought it a month ago and tried it out. Sound quality is even, no crackling or static but the volume is very low. Also I tried calling my cell from the home phone linked to magic Jack and it showed a long distance number on the display. That concerns me knowing a lot of people won't pick up a home phone they don't recognize. In all it's okay but I prefer a solid connection so I returned it.

Just so-so

I purchased it from my local Walmart and in less than one month I returned the adapter for a refund. After only three days I discovered people attempting to call me could not get through getting this message: "MagicJack service is unavailable to customer at this time." This occurred even in early morning hours ruling out service overload. I did some online research only to see where several others are having the same problem. In addition, from day one I had static in 50% of my calls along with several dropped calls. Also, as many are beginning to post online now my device ran extremely warm. I had it connected to my wireless router and plugged into a CyberPower 685AVR battery backup surge protector. I am a former approx. 4 customer of Nettalk and after some extremely poor customer service I decided to try MagicJack. After I returned this device to my local Walmart I bought the BasicTalk voip and it works perfectly. No more missed calls, no static. Yes, BasicTalk does cost more, but "you get what you pay for." I can not recommend MajicJack at this time.
