there is a forward and reverse, but no neutral.  There are lynch pins that latch the wheels to the axle. remove them and slide the wheel in and replace the pin through the axle. Then you can push the tiller without the motor running.

who makes the engine and where is it made? is it made in China?

Good powerful and dependable nice little unit in all honesty  stored it all winter went out started first pull I did nothing special to store it stored it in the shed and full of gas first pull a five minute warm up and went to tilling for a hour or so very happy customer

I tilled a 100x100 in 40 minutes. It ate up the ground rocks and all.

killer machine

The depth adjuster froze on the first one, so I exchanged it.  Tilled an area about 12' X 50'  in hard soil that hadn't been touched in many years.  Did a good job, but did get some bucking and jumping.  Could not operate with one hand until after several passes.  Definitely better than a front tine tiller.

OK machine for the price

Had mine 2 years. After 1st year stored it for winter in my garage with full fuel tank. brought it out in May last year. it fired on the third pull and ran sweet for 2nd year in a row. Last winter stored it in my out building. This time I emptied the tank of all gas as I was instructed to do to keep from trying to start it on old stale gas. When I pulled it out to till my garden this week end I added new gas and proceeded to wear myself out trying to get it to run. After about 20 pulls, it would fire off and run about 30 seconds, then quit. Fooled with it for about two hours until I was exhausted. Pumped out the gas and looked in the tank thinking the new gas may have had some water in it. Found instead the bottom of the tank was full of rust debris. Because it was empty, the tank had completely rusted out on the inside.. Rust particles ares fouling the carbuerator . Now I have to shell out some big coins for a new fuel tank and probably a new carb. plus I wont get my garden tilled in time to set out any plants. Why in the world would the manufacturer put a steel tank on a machine like this. I have several other MTD machines and all have plastic fuel tanks that WONT rust! If you buy this tiller, fill the tank full of fuel when you store it and pump it out next year. $2.00 worth of throw away gas beats what it's going to cost me to fix this thing.

I bought a large rear tine tiller Yard machine (21AA40M7752) at Walmart in Hot Springs Village on 7/19/2017. It did not come with a booklet so there were no instruction on starting it. There were no instructions on the machine other than a sticker that says Place Hand Here When Starting Engine. I went back to the store the next day and several employees looked for a booklet but couldn't find one. I ended up downloading the booklet from the website a day or two later. 
When I finally got to try to start it I found the compression was so bad that it actually yanked my shoulder as the rope forcefully pulled back around the coil. I tried pulling partway to release compression but even that would yank back and even pull the cord handle out of my hand, striking the machine forcefully. After several minutes the machine fired up and I tilled several garden rows. I stopped to go in the house to get a drink of water. When I returned the compression was difficult as before (there is no decompression switch on this model).  After a few tries the cord was yanked from my hand and the cord handle struck my hand (which was place on the sticker where it says to place hand). The force was so hard that my hand below the thumb and the entire wrist immediately became bright purple and swelled about twice the size. I used ice and ibuprofen all evening but the pain and swelling remained. I got an X-ray the next day and the metacarpal below my thumb was fractured.
Now that the splint is off, I attempted to start the tiller last night. I did not put my hand where it says to. I noted that several times when the cord was pulled from my hand, it hit the sticker. I could not start the machine. I loaded up the tiller this morning to take back to Walmart. The man at the desk told me to unload it at the Garden Center and come back in. Then he asked if I had emptied the gas. No I hadn't. The gas would have to be emptied before they could take it back. How I asked? He was unsure. So I drove around to several auto shops and finally found one where the guy disconnected the gas line and drained the gas. I then went back to Walmart. I had to find someone with a key to the garden center so I could unload it and push in. Then I went back to the service desk. The original guy was there but said he couldn't handle a large purchase like that ($449) so he handed me off to another rep, who had to call a manager, who had to call another manager. I was then told they couldn't take it back unless “National” said it was not repairable. Who is national? It's a repair shop across town. They didn't know the address but they could give me directions so I could take it over there and if they can't repair it then I can return the tiller. Is it open today? They thought it might be but if it was it would close early, being Saturday.
I went back to the garden center but didn't find anyone to unlock the gates so that I could push the tiller out and reload it so I left in disgust. This is a brand new tiller. I should not have to shop it all over town or take it somewhere to get it repaired. My hand seems healed and only has some puffiness and light bruise remaining but I probably don't need to be hefting a large tiller off and on a trailer repeatedly. The tiller is still in the garden center at Hot Springs Village. 
I would be happy to supply pictures of my hand, x-rays, prescriptions copies, and doctor bill if you need proof but the sticker really should say, DO NOT place hand here under any circumstances and you all really should just refund my money.
