1TB stands for 1 terabyte which is 1,099,511,627,776, bytes (aprox 1100GB). Hard drive manufacturers use a different table corresponding 1TB to 1000GB which is just not true. So a 1TB hard drive usually gives you around 930Gbytes of storage capability... Hope that helps

Sorta, portable drives tend to be smaller and easier to carry. External hard drives on the other hand are bigger and alot more bulky. External hard drives are a better buy if you do not plan on carrying the thing with you where ever you go.

There is no difference. Some of the portable drives infer that there is only one cable connection (USB), whereas the desktop drives usually need USB and an AC adapter. Check the "What's Included" to verify the equipment.

I've been using this drive for over a year with out any problems. It's my home network backup drive. Connected to an apple extreme router, backing up 3 mac's VIA time machine. I went with WD because i have a old 160g external that's over 10 yrs old and still going strong.

I purchased 2 of these drives and they're rotated off-site to protect against data loss via fire/theft.

Nice basic external drive

The WD 1TB My Book was very easy to install. With the password protected backup it saved all my 80GB of data quickly and securly. I now have 3 my books for the grandfather, father and son backups. I'll never loose my data and I can take it with me when I travel.

Easy Installation

Love this external H. all my HD movies are all saved in this small case. 1 Tera will really make your life easy. My music are also in it so everytime I DJ and I'm using my Rane Serato, I don't need to worry if my pc breaksdown on me during my gig. I can just replace my pc and connnect my 1 tera ext. h. and the party continues. I highly recommend this product..and before I forgot with my new TV capable of connecting this I can watch my movies directly to my TV, Amazing!!! and thanks to Walmart free shipping when you pick it up in store.

A Very Good Investment

I never had an external hard drive before, but this one is easy to install and to operate.

Over the years I have had several computers. They only last a limited number of years. I have stored my photos and important documents on 5 1/4 floppys, 3 1/2 floppys, CD's and USB drives. After a few years, I had to convert to the new technology. I bought the external hard drive to store my pictures and very important documents. I am hoping that whenever the technology changes, or my computer gets old, I can just take my hard drive and plug it into another computer.

Set up was a snap and it works flawlessly. So far, I haven't made a dent in the memory. It should last for a very, very longtime.

Overall a great product. The one thing that is a little tricky is the way it auto backs-up. It saved everything from one drive to four C: folders. Other than the trick to that I love it...

WD 1TB MyBook Essentials External HDD

Finally got one that works. This is the 3rd one I've gotten. NO problem with the return policy. You have to spend your money to ship it to them, and they send one back. Actually had a tech come over and try to install the software on windows 7 and windows XP. no luck. This one works good.

Problem Child

This was nothing but a waste of a $100. I've had this thing for a month and I have only bee able to use it for four days. The power supply keeps failing, and Western Digitals' customer support is useless. On November 12th two days after buying it the power supply failed and I called WD tech support. It took them until December 3rd to get me a new power supply and guess what yup it failed again this morning.

Nothing but Problems

I've had my drive for a few months now and I thought all my files were safe.

I had my original info on my main hard drive. The kids computer served as my secondary backup and my WD drive was my primary backup.

First the kids computer died and then my main one. Now, I'm down to one source for my files (the WD drive).

I bought a new computer and ran the restore utility from Western Digital and guess what? Only a handful of my files were restored!

Any file that I had manually put on the drive was there, so no worries. My movies, photos and music were backed up to the My Book using the software WD included with the drive. Software that now can't find the files that it backed up itself.

Needless to say, I am very upset that I may have lost YEARS of family photos and movies. The missing music is worrysome but I can replace songs.

I will continue to rely on Western Digital products (for now) but only if I backup my files manually. I will NOT be using their software ever, ever, ever, ever, ever again.

Software is screwy.
