Disclaimer: I got this fishing pole free to use and provide my experiences.

Pros: worked really well
Cons: should have come with some hooks and floats.

Getting ready for our annual camping trip to the Cloverdale, CA KOA campground where there is a pond, my 8 year-old daughter asks me to get her a fishing pole so she can try some fishing. Coincidentally, a message went out our internal SPAM email announcements that there were "Frozen fishing poles" available for use and review. How timely.

I'm not sure I would call this a "kit" since it only comes with the rod, reel, line, and casting plug but it worked pretty well. After a few practice casts with the plug, I borrowed a hook and float from this fishing kit which I bought from Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Shakespeare-Complete-Spin-Fishing-Kit/16794778), hooked a worm onto it, and set my daughter off to fish. After catching a few tufts of algae and weeds, she got a bite in less than 10 minutes of fishing. She was so excited. After insisting on hooking the next worm herself, she catches her next fish 5 minutes later. The pole and reel worked flawlessly with only the usual snagged and tangled line to deal with (which is expected with kids and fishing).

At $13 for the kit, it would be well worth the money to see the smile on a successful fisherman's face. Only thing I would add to the "kit" would be some tackle since buying that separately is a chore.

Got my daughter hooked on fishing!

I bought the frozen fishing pole for my 3yr old daughter. We practiced casting around the house with the provided casting plug during the cold months. She got pretty good at it.
I have taken her to the lake several times fishing with it and she has caught several large brim and small catfish.......last weekend she actually caught a smallmouth bass. I thought the light line and small outfit would break but the drag worked and she was able to land the fish. She was extremely proud and so was I!

Great product and would highly recommend to anyone with small children.

I purchased this for my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter as a "teaching" pole.  The price was right and she was able to operate it with no problem.

Shakespeare Beginner's Fishing Starter Kit

Honestly haven't tried this thing out in the wild but we've been holding a casting contest in our office for the past three weeks using one of these things.

So far it's held up really nice after some hefty abuse.

I'd definitely consider buying one for my daughter given how well it works when we're just messing around at the office.

Fun for office antics

I brought this for my niece and she loved it. Pretty good quality for a small fishing rod with reel line. We caught a small fish also. Fun fishing day!

Having broken the first (my daughters) by using a quarter to unscrew the part needed to release the cover for adding new fishing line, I figured I had a second chance to get it right with my sons....so I used an appropriate sized screw driver. Well, walaaa - I managed to completely destroy both. Not only were they in tears about not being able to go out into nature to do the real thing (we got them for Easter and spent weeks learning how to cast inside the house)...but were equally upset about not being able to practice more. 

We couldn't even break the screw mechanism off to break into it and rig it to work. 

Unfortunately, I tossed the receipt so they can't be exchanged. 

0 stars! Don't waste your money or get your little ones hopes up - cause they'll be crushed!

I bought this Frozen fishing reel for my daughter the line broke off inside and I cannot get the cap off to fix it..I've always been a huge Shakespeare fan and have bought many of the products they offer but this has been not only disappointing for me but for my 3 year old daughter also!!!!!

Cannot use more than once!!

I bought this today for my 5 yo lil girl she didn't even get to use it and the line broke . Went to unscrew the plastic screw and it tore to pieces so now I have a very upset little one who didn't even get to go fishing with her brand new rod.

Easter bunny got this for my daughter for easter she got the string stuck and can't unscrew it to fix it.
