I bought this laminator on a hunch, without any recommendation, to use for transferring Laser/toner printouts to copper clad PCB's. I had wanted to try using a laminator to make PCB's but was put off by buying one through the mail - these are stocked at Walmart (usually#. Right out of the box, without any "mods" to the thermostat, and using cheap paper I cut out of a magazine, I got a great, clean transfer which made a really nice board. On the 5 mil setting a 1/16" double sided copper clad board fed right through like this machine was made for it. I fed the board through probably, 10 times and when it cooled the magazine paper popped right off without soaking and about 99% of the toner had completely transferred to the board - there was no toner left on the paper. I was pretty astonished #in a good way# and Im left wondering if Scotch got smart and some of this performance wasn't engineered into the machine #this is version 2 of this machine#...probably not but no matter...it seems to get just hot enough for a clean transfer...if I can repeat these results I wouldn't even think of modding it..

Sucessful Toner transfer for PCB

Purchased the Scotch TL902 Thermal Laminator for a presentation project. Easy to set up and use. Love the hidden cord storage. 5-6 minutes for the blue ready light to glow. Quiet operation, works great on the first pass, no bubbles. I am thrilled that a carrier sheet is not required. 

I wasn't sure if I wanted to make the investment in the machine, and I priced out laminating my presentation at two box stores. Hands down, the laminator just about paid for itself on this one project, even though I had to purchase a box of laminating sleeves. The laminator comes with only two letter size laminating sleeves. 

**BONUS** I Didn't realize there is a handy carrier handle incorporated into the design.

One tiny nit: The tabs are a tad too short to hold the input tray in the storage position, so just be careful when lifting, that it doesn't flop out. 

Other than that, this is a great machine and I would recommend it to others.

Great Laminator, Excellent Price Point!

I received the 3M Scotch Thermal Laminator 9" and a package of Scotch Thermal Laminating Pouches for free from 3M in exchange for a review.

That being said, I am an elementary teacher and the mother of a toddler, and I am able to use these products at both work and home. Since I laminate things I need to reuse over and over for work, I'm VERY picky about my laminating. It HAS to be able to withstand the numerous pairs of questionably clean hands of kindergartners, first graders, and second graders that touch the laminated product. Not only do I like how the laminator works, but I also love how well the pouches work after lamination to protect my papers. In fact, I like it better than my school building's commercial-grade laminator. Also, I laminate sheets of paper that I later cut into cards, so it's very important that the laminating film does not peel. I am VERY pleased with how well this little laminator takes care of making sure my laminating film is heated up enough to form an excellent non-peeling seal, even when it is cut apart.

I really have not found one thing I do not like about this little powerhouse of a laminator. Here is a list of the things I found I DO like:
- Quiet warm-up and operation -- It was never a distraction to me or my students.
- Only takes 4-5 minutes to warm up at the 3-mil thickness setting. I turn it on and move on to my next task until it's ready to go.
- Outside of laminator unit gets warm, but not hot. I use this as an indicator that the heating element is working.
- It's easy to tell when the unit is ready to laminate. There is a large blue dot that is illuminated when it's ready to go!
- While there is sometimes a slight odor when the unit is warming up, I did not find it overwhelming or annoying.
- The paper/pouch feed is very smooth and slow enough so as not to wrinkle, yet is fairly quick for the great job it does.
- The laminator seals the pouches well with one pass through (regular thickness copy/printer paper).
- The laminating pouches do not peel when I cut them apart to make game cards.
- The laminating holds up well to student use and abuse of pages and game cards.
- The unit cools down fairly quickly.
- The electric cord wraps up in the bottom of the unit for easy storage.

Overall, I love this little laminator and might even purchase another to keep at home, as I seem to use the free one I got from 3M nearly every day at work. I like that I can have something laminated quickly and be using it in a fraction of the time it takes to have things laminated when I send them off to be laminated in my school building.

In short, I would purchase this Scotch Thermal Laminator in a heartbeat for myself or someone I know who has a need for such a product.

I will recommend this laminator to anyone who needs a laminator for personal use like myself. I am now laminating endlessly for my two toddlers. I totally love this piece of apparatus. Excellent laminator

My schools laminator was constantly breaking and I decided to invest in my own. I'm a broke teacher and this seemed so affordable. It works great and heats up quickly! Well worth the money! I'm even printing my niece digital art and laminating it for her!

Great product, especially for the price!

This is an excellent home product that every home should have. Its light weight yet it does an awesome job laminating. Im a homeschool teacher and its perfect.

Great homeschool tool.

This replaces an older laminator (from the same brand )that stopped working. The older one had a horizontal entry and exit which worked perfectly for my purpose. I make bookmarks for a non profit and they have to stay flat inside the laminating pouch to keep them in place while entering the machine. This new laminator has an angled entry and I'm having a terrible time keeping the book marks in place. I'm getting frustrated so I might have to search for a different model. 

On the other hand, this one made perfect letter-size flyers. Maybe there's a learning curve for me to adjust for making book marks.

Hard to keep small items in place

I purchased this laminator in mid-September and by December, the loading tray has already broken. I am a teacher and have used it to laminate for my classroom, but overall it has had minimal use. I am disappointed that this laminator broke after only a few months of use. I've used only a handful of times

Laminating tray broke after minimal use

I have had this for 11 months used about 3 times . I tried to use it , plugged it up it sounds like it's on but will not heat up . Call customer service very helpful but no receipt. You have no replacement. I would not buy this product.  Model TL 902

I somehow convinced myself that my Wal-Mart brand "Pen Gear" lamintor was too basic and it was time to upgrade. I've used this Scotch brand laminator a few times no problems. Today I got my new state Registration renewal card and decided to go ahead and protect it with my lamintor. I put my Registration in the Scotch brand 5 Mil pouch popped it on the feed and by the time it hit me that it wasn't coming out the other end. It was too late. I used tweezers and pliers and it was HOT pulling it out. This could have ended much worse. My cheap "Pen Gear" will be my primary from now on. I hope this was user error because if this is a manufacturer defect it will surely cause a serious fire or worse.
