Yes the next generation Roku 1 also comes with the standard definition component style cable with 3 RCA/PHONE type plugs at the end included. It also comes with a power supply to run the Roku, a Remote Control for the Roku and Batteries for the Remote. It does NOT included an HDMI cable.

This model, the Roku 1, works with virtually any TV. It comes with the proprietary cable to connect to the Red/White/Yellow component input jacks on a standard definition TV in the box. In fact all Roku boxes made in the past 2 years work with virtually any TV except for the ROKU 3 which requires a HDMI input which means it only connects to a HDTV. So you can buy a Roku 1, connect it to your old TV and when you upgrade to a HDTV just add a HDMI cable (not included) and it will deliver in high definition to the new HDTV. The Roku LT also does the same thing, but does up to 720p HD while all the other Roku models will do up to 1080p HD. The Roku 1 would be a good choice to use with an old TV because it is ready for upgrading to whatever HDTV you might wind up buying in the future.

no you don't. I have the older tvs before they came out with the HD's. It comes with the wire with the 3 plugs to plug into a regular tv. And it will hook up to a DH tv if you ever did buy you one of those tvs.

No. I bought the Roku 1 because it is the only Roku that works on older TVs. It has the red, white, and yellow plugs. It works great on my 2005 Sanyo tv.

There are very few live streaming channels on ROKU. A few include CNN International and most of the same home shopping channels you see on cable TV. Fox News does only part of the day live. A few vintage TV channels give you an option of live streaming or on demand viewing. Otherwise everything else, about 99% of Roku channels are video on demand.

There are NO LIVE LOCAL TV channels are on Roku. Roku only plays on your TV what is fed to it via the Internet. Roku does not pickup over the air TV broadcast transmissions. There is no live ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CW, WB, etc channels at all on the Internet, unless you subscribe to the PLAY ON tv service, which is low definition and not feeding live network feeds but instead is episodes of major network shows on demand. I'd opt for the Hulu Plus instead.

So, you will need an antenna if the local stations are close enough or basic cable if an antenna won't work where you live. (If going the cable route you can get their very lowest tier of service. Many have a level below "Basic Cable" so be sure to ask for the very cheapest package. Ask for the "Basic" package and you'll pay much more. You have to ask for the cheapest service they have.)

To see what channels are on Roku, visit ROKU GUIDE DOT COM or ROKU DOT COM. Love my Roku units and I'm presently using about 200 Roku channels, all but 4 of which are free....but Roku doesn't have local channels, so you'll still want a way to get them. By getting the cheapest cable package available I've saved about $1000 a year since buying a ROKU and downgrading cable service. I have more TV than I can watch now!

No, a Roku does not pickup local stations. You need to use an antenna to get local channels if you are close enough to the transmission towers or cable if you are too far away. Since I live too far from the transmitters (40 miles) I use the local cable carrier's least expensive service. Here Time Warner has a "local channels only" package that is a fraction of what basic cable costs. It includes more than just local channels though. First I called and asked about "BASIC CABLE" and was quoted a much higher price than I'm paying now. Apparently if you ask for "BASIC CABLE" that is not actually the cheapest service here. So be careful about using the term "Basic Cable" with your cable carrier since that may not actually be the cheapest package they offer. Tell them you only want local channels and see if they have such a package as they have here. About 99% of what is on ROKU is video on demand. Live streaming is done by very few channels such as CNN International and the home shopping channels. To see all the channels available visit either the Roku site or check at Rokuguide dot com. I prefer to use Rokuguide dot com because they also list private channels, because they write reviews plus allow user comments on every channel along with the exact costs for premium channels detailed. The official Roku site doesn't list any pricing info on premium channels unless they are Roku administrated like Movie Vault. With over 800 channels to plow through I want all the help I can get. Since switching from full blown cable to a Roku with the very cheapest cable available I am saving nearly $1,000 per year. Love my Roku units!

It's not a digital television tuner so it's not going to grab signals out of the air for your TV. Roku is about giving you the ability to stream stuff off of the internet onto your television. Most television stations don't broadcast on the internet unfortunately.

You may be able to stream some live TV if not now soon.

Got a Roku 1 and tried it along with my cable for a week or so. Liked it so much, bought 2 more and a Roku 2. Took ALL 3 OF MY DIGITAL CABLE BOXES BACK. Saving over $100 a month now!!!

There are 1000's of FREE shows, movies, and tons of kids shows. Also many channels you can subscribe to for small fees. It also came with free trials to VUDU, Hulu+, REDBOX, netflix, amazon prime and others.

Roku beats cable bills!!

Product is small, easy to install and converts a television (with an HDMI cord) into a SMART TV. I love it and it saved us money by not having to buy a new television. We stream our Netflix through it and have no problems. The only down fall so far is that you can only view one Netflix account, where as on the PS3 each person in our home created a station for ourselves. However, overall I am 100% satisfied with my purchase of the Roku 1.

Roku 1 ~ Cheaper than buying a SMART TV

I am almost ready to give up my $160 monthly cable bill and just use my internet and Roku. When I started thinking about it, the only things I watch on tv now are mostly things that can be seen on Roku. News is depressing (but I can also get all that I need on internet with my tablet, computer, cell phone, or I can even watch some on my ROKU. This thing is wonderful. I really wish they had more Nick shows but there are lots of Disney shows I can watch plus, I can also let the kids watch the older movies I used to watch when I was growing up. They are much more family friendly than today's shows.

absolutely the BEST product i have ever bought!!

I have been a long time user of Roku boxes, having purchased the first one when they were only capable of receiving Netflix. Now, they can access over 1,000 internet "channels" both free and pay, and the number continues to grow. Right now, I have several units hooked up to various TV's in my home. While I would have preferred to have a Roku box with an Ethernet connection, this model (Roku 1) has only wireless, but it was half the price of the Roku 3. So far, the wireless has worked fine. There's barely any difference between this model and the Roku LT except that the LT model only has 720p, and not 1080p. In actual usage, I cannot tell the difference in the picture, and to reduce the amount of bandwidth on my network, I actually prefer the 720p mode. But the price was the same for the Roku LT and the Roku 1, so I opted for the Roku 1. If you can get the LT for $10 less, you won't be disappointed.

The new units are smaller than the original Roku boxes, and have fewer connections. They now have more memory and processing power, and are able to load a wider variety of channels than the original boxes. However, all of my favorite channels, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus and Aereo are available on all of the boxes. Users of older Roku's will notice a difference in the remote control: the remote with the new boxes has a new back arrow and an asterisk button. Some services use these keys for navigation, making it difficult to use the older remotes. However, the command set is the same, so the new remotes will work fine with the older boxes, and vice versa. (That's great since we are always losing remotes.)

Roku added a nice feature to the remote control: hot keys for Netflix, Amazon, Vudu and MGo. Too bad it wasn't my 4 favorites, but 2 out of 4 ain't bad.

The unit is shipped with an analog RCA a/v cable (video, audio L/R). However, 99% of people will throw this away and opt to use an HDMI cable for their TV. Too bad that the HDMI cable was not included. These are available online for about $3 to $5 so, but they should have included it with the Roku box.

Set-up was a breeze since I already have a Roku account. The wireless range was very good, and reached from my basement (router) to an upstairs bedroom with no problem.

If you don't have a "Smart TV" (one with internet channels built-in) then you should have a Roku. And it doesn't matter which one. We are "cord cutters" watching just over-the-air TV and internet channels, saving a ton of money on cable TV charges, and never without something to watch. But even if you have cable, the Roku is a necessary addition to your TV.

I can't say enough good things about Roku. They are the leader in content and have been around the longest. Even my oldest Roku units are still working, and I have no doubt that they will continue for many years to come.

Everyone should have one of these

$50 is great. I got this one because it is the only Roku that works with old TVs. NO YouTube with Roku 1. I can stream Netflix. My son loves the PBS Kids channel and the Disney Junior. A&E, History Channel, and PBS are great. The news channels are so-so. A lot of the free channels just show clips, but the documentary channels are really good. I cannot get Facebook to work. Overall, I love it. A++++++

This is great!
I don't have to hook up my laptop to my TV anymore to get my Netflix, HBO GO, Showtime and Hulu Plus. One remote and there it is. The picture is much better also. No more buffering and shutting down while watching a show. I liked it so much, I bought two more for each of my children in college!
