It opens in one direction which is best if being used on the stairs for safety reasons.

The spaces are 2.5&quot; except where the gate latch is--that one is 3&quot;. None of my cats can fit through, so unless you have a very skinny tiny puppy, I can&#39;t imagine a dog would be able to.

The usable walk through space when the door is swung open is just over 16&quot; wide. I thought it seemed a bit narrow when I first installed the gate but when using it I don&#39;t seem to have any problem.

The gate is roughly 27 1/2- 28 inches wide so it will fit inside the space you mentioned but it will definitely be cutting it close and I am not certain how it will work as far as twisting the rubber spindles to create the pressure to keep it in place. 

Keep in mind that there is a spring loaded pin you must insert into the gate to attach the door to the gate and this cannot be taken out after it has been put in. That would make returning the product difficult if it does not fit. I would suggest you find a gate that is appropriate for the opening size but if you want to risk it, then check the fit BEFORE inserting this pin.

This was ordered so I could keep my dogs out of my home office, but keep my door open. It's easy to use, easy to move as needed and holds up to me running in and  out all day.

Easy to use and durable

Very easy to install! So far, my 2 year old grandson hasn't been able to unlock it. Not recommended for tall dogs with a lot of energy. Ours can jump over the fence.

I really love that this gate can be used without a drill, and also has the option to use a drill if you wanted. Super cool! It got off balance once in the 2 weeks that it’s been up, mind you my son tries to shake it down lol (we did the pressure mount) it’s really sturdy I love it

These are great gates.  My children are grown, but we have a new puppy who REALLY likes the cat's food.  I purchased two gates so we could maintain her boundaries.  They were very easy to install.  I love that you can expand the width of the gate to fit a wider door frame!  Recommend for children and pets. I would definitely purchase again.
