These are made out of wood, and have a stain on the outside to make them a deep espresso color.

Not ceramic. They are actually turned out of wood with what seems to be a dark laquer finish.

What are these made of? Are they ceramic?

What is the grinding mechanism made of? Is it steel, ceramic, or plastic?

Plastic plug at the bottom. So far has been easy to fill and put plastic plug back. Have really been very pleased.

Does the top of the salt shaker come off to be filled, or is there a plastic plug on the bottom?

I have been looking for some time for a good and affordable S & P grinder set. After really looking I got this one and I love it!!! The color is a nice rich brown, the grinder works beautifully and the salt does not pour out, it shakes perfectly! I highly recommend this product!

Fantastic set for home!

Ideally speaking each kitchen would be given the grandiose Vic Firth pepper grinder for free. However, seeing as we do not live in an ideal world, I have found this set to do just the job for me. I was looking for a permanent pepper grinder but didn't necessarily feel the need for a salt grinder. This set comes with a lifetime limited warranty which is great and by all appearances these could have been purchased at a fancy department store. They look great on the table, the grinder is adjustable and has done a great job so far. My one complaint is the top nut has the tendancy to unscrew it self as I am grinding which make the grind a little coarser. Overall, I am very pleased with this product and would definitely reccoment it to anyone who has problems with the Vic Firth price but wants a good grinder. Look no farther!

Not a Vic Firth, but plenty good enough

I just got these, and they are great. They work great and look wonderful on my table. I saw where someone else gave a negative review on here stating that online the color was stated to be black. I don't see that anywhere. It says the color is espresso, which is a dark brown (like espresso coffee) not black. This is a great set, definitely worth the money.

Perfect

These seem very well built. I like the way the look and I also like the adjustablity of the pepper grinder. These are a very good buy, I highly recommend them.

Well built

I was pleasantly surprised by the apparent quality and how they look on my table. Very nice family sized shaker set, but probably a little larger than necessary for a single person with an occasional guest type situation.

Nice Shaker Set

I bought this product a year back, and have been using it regularly without any problem.
There is not much to say about a salt shaker for their functioning. They solve their purpose which is pretty simple. However, the good thing about it is the material used, the finish and the size. these seemed to be made of solid wood and have been very durable. Have a good presence on the table and are pretty comfortable to hold. The pepper mill has still held up very well, with no problems with the milling mechanism or the screws. I would definitely recommend it for the looks and the ergonomics, but $15 is a bit on the higher side for a salt shaker and a pepper mill (though I try justifying it to myself with the quality).

quality product but at a price

I have been looking for these for some time and was so glad to see them online. I hope that in the future there will be a salt grinder that comes in a set.

Good deal

I had another S/P set for several years, that was a lot more expensive. The plunger on the salt shaker ended up falling out all of the time though and getting piles of salt everywhere. The one on this set holds much more solidly and the set is nice. The grinder works well too.

So far so good

The set is nice but not really what I expected. This is my fault. The peppermill does not hold as much pepper as expected. I can already tell that it will need to be filled quite often. It also grinds the pepper to dust which is not quite what I expected. I will keep the set but will look for a larger set in person.

Great set but smaller than expected

I tried to clean it by rinsing with water, the blades RUSTED after they were dry. It says lifetime warranty but they did not respond to my email at all

Do not wash with water, very difficult to clean.
