Nikon's VR (Vibration Reduction) technology is an exciting feature which allows sharp photographs to be taken when the camera cannot be held perfectly still.

The VR stands for Vibration Reduction which mainly suppose to reduce the hand vibration of photographer while he is taking pictures

VR lenses are vibration reduction lenses. The VR are the same basic design as the non VR lenses. Basically, in bright sunlight or under flash, the lenses should produce identical results. In low light, you may have to use a flash quicker or be aware that you might have to brace yourself more than you would with a VR lens.

There are many similarities between the D3200 and the D5100, a few key differences are:
-The D3200 has a 24.2 Mega Pixel sensor. The D5100 has a 16.2 megapixel
-The D3200 has a Guide Mode to help beginners learn the camera's key features and controls. The D5100 does not have this feature.
-The D5100 has more advanced features like Exposure Bracketing and White Balance Bracketing. The D3200 does not have these features.
-The ISO range on the D3200 is ISO 100 - 6400, Hi-1 (ISO 12,800). The ISO range on the D5100 is
ISO: ISO 100 -6400, Hi-0.3, Hi-0.7, Hi-1 (ISO 12,800), Hi-2 (ISO 25,600)
-The D5100 has more Scene Modes and Effects than the D3200.
-The D5100 has a vari-angle monitor that rotates out from the camera. The D3200's monitor is fixed in place.

As a simplification of the features as noted above, the 5100 would be the higher end camera, but the 3200 the newer model, thus the 5100 with more options, but 3200 with more megapixels as typical with successive model years. The 3200 has an exposed screen at all times on the back, like any point and shoot digital cameras. The D3200 has 24mp on the image chip, so the resolution is slightly higher, and you can make slightly larger enlargements than the 16mp D5100. The D5100 has a moveable rear LCD screen that can actually be turned up to 180 degrees, to allow you to view from different angles (over your head, etc) and even to expose a black plastic panel so the LCD is completely protected from view. If you are making a transition from a 35mm film camera to a digital SLR and are used to holding the camera up to your eye the D5100 can mimic the solid back of the old slr cameras.

Accidentaly, I bought a Nikon D5100 with AF-S lenses instead of VR ... I realised only when I unpacked it & took few telephoto shot using 55-200 mm lense. The photos are little blur unless one learns to control the hand vibration ... 18-55 mm lense really gave great shots.

Great DSLR camera

As an amateur, I feel no difference between VR and non-VR lenses. Happy with the product. Moreover that I got it on black Friday for $499! I expected it to be much larger, but it came out pretty compact DSL camera. Image quality is great. Cannot say anything yet about battery life, did not test it for this parameter.

Great camera!

She searched for the longest time and all she wanted was THAT camera. She knew just what she was looking for and she got it. I'm not a camera expert but for what she told me, it's PERFECT. I try to use it w/o reading the booklet and it was OK, but still need to go deeply into it. For me a camera is a camera, but when looking at the pictures, you can see the difference in the product.
Hope we can enjoy the camera for a long time.

I have no complaints on this camera at all. Takes great pictures! Can be as easy as you want or you can take total control of all settings. Scene modes are useful for different situations you encounter. The effects modes work well too. I have already taken better pictures than I ever have in my life.

I have read more articles and camera reviews before buying my gr8 Nikon D5100.
Low noise / picture quality/ depth of the pixels / good battery life..
And it has all the features with this cost :)!

Please update firmware A&B once you get the product, it will improve the performance and battery!
A 1.02 - improves the battery, now we can take ~700 shots.

Awesome Camera!

Because of all the dSLR and lens choices, I was concerned I would either buy too advanced or not advanced enough. The d5100 with the non-VR seems to have hit my sweet spot. Manual settings are super easy to use and produce quality pics. And there are plenty of advanced features to keep me learning and growing as a photographer for many years.

I've used the long exposure settings to take some cool water pics with a tripod. A recent ice storm in Dallas provided some really great shots. Next family get-together I'll be trying out the indoor portrait techniques.

Ease of use for beginner plus advanced features

Nikon D5100 could be really a great camera for beginner and getting in black Friday deal in low price with additional 55-200 mm lens is a bonus. however this lens is non-vr guess. Since i got Nikon D7000 so I did no left with any choice except to return D5100 that was my primary choice in low budget before I got D7000 in hand. I did not use much so ca not comment on battery life.

Nikon D5100 is really a great camera for beginner

I was so tired of not being able to get good pictures of my child's performances in a gymnasium or auditorium so I decided to buy this camera. I have only had the opportunity to use it at one function so far, but I couldn't be happier! : ) The pictures are very sharp and clear, the colors are right on and the shutter speed was fast enough that I didn't miss any shots. I wish I had purchased a Nikon DSLR years ago! I can't wait to take a class so that I can learn how to fully use all of the bells and whistles. I bought this on Black Friday so the price was incredible also. If you are tired of never getting a good picture of your children's shows and activities at school, or just with everyday activities, treat yourself to being able to preserve those precious memories with this camera....I did :)

Great features at great price. Comes with two lenses which is an added benefit. Nikon D 5100 with 16.2 mega pixels takes excellent pictures. I would recommend take photos on aperture mode or shutter priority mode instead of auto mode. Night portrait and landscape results are sharp and clear with minimal noise. Read manual (and adjust settings specially ISO sensitivity if you are on aperture mode). Not sure about battery life as of yet as I played with camera a lot and still learning. Both the lense are non- vr versions and works perfectly for family use.
