I have never made jerky before but I'm on my fourth batch. It comes with two packages of spices to make jerky. I also went on the internet and found recipes to make. It is so easy to do!

The only other equipment you need is a knife! Buy some tender meet and slice it into thin strips and marinate it. I haven't even got my dehydrator yet but I've been studying and shopping hard and I like the FD80. If you don't find exactly what you are looking for as far as recipes in the book, an online search will find a wealth of dehydrator recipes and instructions, spice recommendations, etc. I'll need a bit of Liquid Smoke in my jerky recipe. I'm not interested in jerky made from ground beef so I won't be needing the Jerky Gun kit. I expect to be a big star amongst my hiking group!

You can make jerky with ground beef or with your choice of beef. If you choose to used sliced meat then you must marinade the meat overnight (at least 8 hours). There is a recipe in the manual for it. If you use ground meat (beef, buffalo, or turkey) you mix in the spice and the cure that comes with the dehydrator and with the jerky gun, then just start drying for about 4 1/2 to 5 hours at 160 degrees. You can purchase more spice and different varietys at Nesco.com or Walmarts web site. Either way you make it you'll love it.

I looked up a recipe online that was pretty easy to follow, but there is one right in the book that comes with it as well. It also comes with seasoning packets for your first beef jerky trial. Ours came out great! It was fairly simple, we cut the beef into thin strips, marinated it for about 4 hours, then placed it in the dehydrator for about 6 hours.

It comes with spice packets to make jerky, it also comes with recipes. The easiest way to make jerky is to use some bottled teriyaki sauce, Chaka's mmm sauce, or Yoshida's. You can use whatever spices you want. You don't need any special equipment to make jerky, unless you make it with ground meat, but you can cheat with that and just shape the meat by hand. I even dried kielbasa sausage, and that came out tasty!

Jerky is easy to make. We have made a few batches since Christmas. You don't need to buy expensive spice kits - Dale's (available at most grocery stores near BBQ sauces) is a great way to start. We marinated thin steak slices in Dale's, then onto the racks.

A recipe book comes with it, but you can find many recipes on line as well.

Commercial Jerky... just saw it at $3.50 for for 3.5 oz (or $16.00 lb).

Many butchers (even at Sam's club) may thin slice steak for you for little or no fee.

The dehydrator has recipes and you can get some accessories from the company that makes them or Amazon.com. No kits needed. You can buy any recipe on line. Just Google jerky recipes.

You don't have to have the extra kits to make jerky with a dehydrator. You can make any flavor using any marinades and spices you like from your grocer. - Be creative. I love carribean jerk and buffalo hot sauce flavored jerky. Teriyaki is very popular. Look online to find tips on making your own.

It's really easy to make jerky you just need time. It comes with seasoning and recipes but you can use your own marinade. You do need a special tray not included for ground beef jerky.

The manual tells you how to make jerky. I haven't tried it, but it doesn't look hard. It came with a couple of packages of seasoning for jerky. I also found resources on drying foods at my local library with lots of recipes.

This is a great machine to make jerky with and if you use our Nesco/American Harvest spices you'll end up with some of the best tasting jerky you've ever had. The spices are available on this site also. You can make jerky from lean ground beef. Just mix 1 pack of spice, 1 pack of cure (comes with spices) for each 1 lb. of ground beef. Mix these up in a bowl then put into your jerky gun and extrude the strips onto the trays of the dehydrator. Dehydrate at highest setting for 4-5 hours and you have beef jerky ! You can also use whole meat - venison, elk, etc., or buy the least expensive beef roast in the store and cut it into thin jerky strips (it helps to have a food slicer for this to get the thin strips consistently). Then mix the spices with water and marinate the strips overnight or longer. Some marinate as long as 48 hours for maximum taste. You do need a jerky gun which is also offered here. There are jerky recipes in the dehydrator manual. Make the best jerky you've ever tasted at a fraction of the cost of store bought.

No, it does not. You have to keep a check on the status of what you are dehydrating, and then turn it off yourself.

It doesn't shut off automatically because some pieces may be dry and others still moist. However, I've got a device that turns my reading light on and off at certain times of the night, and I've put that on the drier to make it shut off at a specific time. :)

No, it doesn't. You have to manually unplug the unit. You will need to check whatever you are dehydrating every once in a while to see how done it is. Also, when making jerky, you need to take a paper towel every once in a while and soak up any grease that may have worked its way to the surface of the meat. This is done because even though the cure keeps the meat from going bad quickly, the grease will go rancid in a short period of time, making the meat inedible.

One was supposed to have been included. I called the 800 number to complain, and received the tray within one week.

The amount of product you can put on the 4 racks is amazing. Washed the racks in the dishwasher and they cleaned up nicely. Have 4 more racks coming and will be able to dry 12 pounds of meat at a time for jerky. Nice to not have to rotate racks. Put it in at night and the jerky is ready by morning.

Dehydrator works very well and is a great value! I have a timer I plan to use with this product next time as there is no on/off switch.
