Yes they are what Midland advertises as 36 miles

they are "36 mile" and come with everything in the picture and in that color

The advertised range of ALL FRS/GMRS radios is hardly ever attainable. The maximum range depends upon the overall elevation of the communicating radios and the type of obstructions between them. On two mountaintops with a low valley between each unit, a user might possibly achieve a 30- to 36-mile range. However, in the REAL world, with lower elevations, hills, trees, buildings, and the like, the effective range is more likely 1 or 2 miles, and often less, depending upon terrain and obstructions. Advertised range is actually the maximum range under totally IDEAL conditions, which is seldom the case in average use.

They are at most 2 miles.  My home is 1.2 miles from my business and they barely work.  36 miles might work if the 2nd walkie is 36 miles up.   Having said that if you have a powerful base unit they talkie would possibly pick it up.  Receiving the signal from the walkie would be a different story.

Are these really the GXT1000VP4 black and white, cause the range are 36 mile, according to midland website, but at wal-mart it says 30 mile range.

To operate them on FRS (Family Radio Service) channels, no license is needed. However, to use GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) channels, you DO need a license from the FCC. GMRS has higher power and longer range, and those channels are usually less congested, but that's of little concern in most applications. FRS is quite sufficient for most uses. A GMRS license is obtainable from the FCC, and there is a fee, but the fee is for several years before the license expires. Note that you CAN operate on GMRS channels without a license, but if monitored and detected by FCC field officers, you can face some stiff fines. Check out the FCC website for details.

I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY DAD THAT IS BLIND SO WHEN HE NEEDS ME I AM OUT SIDE HE HAS A WAY TO GET HOLD OF ME, THE BUTTONS ON THE SIDE IS BIG ENOUGH THAT HE CAN FIND IT AND IT BEEPS LET HIM KNOW THAT HE CAN TALK.  HOW FAR I CAN GO WITH IT IS NOT BAD YOU CANT GO 10 MILES WITH IT BUT I THINK IT IS BECAUSE I LIVE IN A HILLY AREA. BUT IF ARE OUT IN THE FEILD OR IN THE WOODS YOU SHOULD BE OK. THE BATTARY LIFE IS NOT BAD . I WENT 2 DAY ALMOST 3 DAYS BEFORE I HAD TO CHARGE IT. BUT THAT IS WITH NOT USE IT MUCH. ITS NOT BAD THE HEAD SET FEELS LITTLE OFF TO ME THAT COULD JUST BE ME. IT WORTH THE MONEY IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO SIMPLE THINGS WITH IT.

GREAT WORKS FOR US

The Midland GXT1000VP4 50 channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio works fine over short distances. I have not had any luck with 36-mile range. The range is a few miles under good conditions, but that is all I need. The good things about the pair of radios is that you have 50 channels and encoding to select the radios that will receive the signal. You can add more radios and make this a good radio system with parents on one channel and others on other channels. It is very useful. The radio also has 3 power levels to select from to conserve the included rechargeable battery backs. A charger that operates on a 120 VAC wall wart or a 12 VDC using a cigarette lighter receptacle. The charger will charge both radios at the same time. The battery packs are also designed to use non-rechargeable batteries if desired. Accessories include belt clips, a headset/mics and for each radio. The Midland GTX1000VP4 FMS/GMRS Two-Way Radio is an excellent to use or as a present for anyone needing one. One additional feature I should mention is the CALL button which causes the radio you are calling to Ring alerting the radio called to respond to the caller.

These are great little radio's , not as good as a mobile unit but much better than a FRS radio. Easy to get a license but of course it is on a government website so a little confusing . $35 for ten years, no test and your family is covered.  
These do not connect to repeaters but can connect to other hand held several miles away even in congested areas.

Good little hand held, much better than FRS radios

I'm new to two-way radios however my first two-way radio that I bought for the family was FRS radios I upgraded to GMRS since GRS has better range sound and more functionalities even though it needs licensing overall, this is a great radio and very satisfied with it I have also ordered Midland brand to wear radios FRS system since the quality and the sound of this radios are awesome.

Great product

Prefect small radio to switch between vehicles with out needing to hardwire in something.  Really like the weather built in.
