No, not with the existing materials provided. You'd have to get a hacksaw.

The frame of the bed can't be adjusted. If you are looking for one that isn't so high, check out the Dorel Junior Loft Bed. It is only 36" from floor to the bottom of the loft, and still holds a twin mattress. Max weight on the junior loft is 225 lbs, so it's still pretty sturdy.

If you divide 68 by 12 you will find the height it states is 5'6" or 5.666666666666667, So should have no problem with headroom.

Can the height of the entire unit be adjusted?

It has the L-wrench supplied. But you need a circle wrench to hold the nut (which is not supplied).

All tools (allen wrenches) come with bed with the exception of a pair of needle nose pliers (my choice) to pinch the mattress clips together for easier installation.

It requires to sizes of allen wrench but it comes with them.

The allen wrenches are included. An electric screwdriver is helpful though.

It comes with 2 sizes of hex wrenches that you need, but I'd recommend a hammer for the pieces to hold in the slats as well as some gloves if you have some handy.

No, it isn't that it wouldn't hold the weight, there just isn't room on the top for the mattress and a box spring. We just have a simple foam mattress on ours & if there was anything underneath it then the bars on the side would not be high enough to stop the user from rolling over the side.

No, a box spring would not fit. It would put the mattress above the top railing.

I haven't tried this but I'm not sure if it would work? Maybe it would if you have very thin mattress and boxsprings but with the rungs/supports that are provided, a mattress is all you need. Keep in mind the more you fill the allotted space for the mattress the less guard rail you will have and the bed sits pretty high. It might look a little like the princess and the pea bed with both pieces up there?

if you put the box spring under the mattress it will definately come up over the rails.

Using a boxspring would bring the mattress too high over the bars.

Haven't tried it, but believe that the box spring would cause mattress to rise above rails. Our mattress is 9 inches, and leaves about 5 inches of space between the top of the mattress and the top of the rails.

I bought this to use in a bedroom for a 10 year old boy. The room is small so the loft frees up a lot more floor space for him. He loves it! It is sturdier and more durable than I had expected. It took two people to put this together and took a few hours but directions were easy to follow. I would recommend anchoring the bed to the wall. It says optional in the directions but it is much more stable if you anchor it. We like having a ladder on each end of the bed so nothing sticks out into the room. It is easy for my son to climb in and out of, a little trickier for me. I am about 5'3" and can sit up in the bed completely. There is room underneath for a desk, bookshelf, seating, etc. but not room enough for me to stand up straight. We are able to fit a queen air bed underneath the loft which works great for company. We are very pleased with the functionality and the quality, especially with the affordable price!
