The side walls are 15mm or just short of 5/8 of an inch.

A safety secure is provided to attach the unit to a wall.

It has two brackets, two are used for standard back to wall anchoring and one can be used for sideway anchoring

I just put mine together today, and I think they would do fine on their side.

Yeah, as long as they aren&#39;t too heavy.

can this be laid on it&#39;s side for a wider, and shorter version?

This is a great bookcase. I’ve actually turned mine on its side and I’m using it as my TV stand. 
The assembly was easy using the company’s video demonstration on YouTube. Such a great idea as you can stop and start the video as you go. 
The company was extremely responsive in getting me a replacement hardware packet as mine was lost in shipping. 
Great product, great instructions, great customer service. Highly recommend!
