There are 3 leg supports on which the desk top rests. They are essential and must be attached in order for the desk to have integrity. There is also a lower shelf for the CPU and a horizontal back board which must be attached for strength. The keyboard under mount, the mouse slide out tray, the little drawer and the printer shelf are add ons and I suppose you could leave them off. All the pieces come separately and need to be screwed together.

All the visible wooden parts are black laminated.

The desk, storage cabinet and bookcase have backing that are placed on with thin nails and are black in color to match the frames of the pieces. The only 'unpainted' sides are the inside of the file drawer and the bottoms of the bookcase, storage cabinet and storage compartment on the desk.

simple answer is , any visible sides are painted black. any section that is not visible to us if we walk around the product are not painted. over all , i would say 15 % of the sides are not painted and 85% are painted.

You can choose. We bought 2 sets. One with a computer keyboard pullout (the one we bought at a Walmart store) and the other does not have one (ordered online). Best to read item description and specs before you purchase.

no, the desk only has a little storage space and a door to close it. No pull out keyboard drawer, so Id say this is more geared towards laptops and small all in one computers.
