How does this work? Do you set the pot on a stove burner to heat the water?

This will not make 2 full cups of coffee. This is an espresso (Cuban) coffee maker. Try using Cuban coffee(Bustelo) and you can add warm milk to your cup if it is too strong drinking it straight. Great product if used correctly.

Coffee

The 12 cups refers to Italian Demi-tasse which hold 1.25 ounces. So you get about 2 small mugs. Be sure to grind coffee extra fine or buy espresso grind coffee. Set your burner to high heat to create the needed steam. I love this pot!

Espresso Pot

After 17 years living 100 miles north of Italy, I grew fond of genuine Italian espresso. This pot is really the only way to do it right. In Itally espresso is served in a shot glass sized cup. Therefor, a 12 cup espresso pot will make 12 shots about 1 oz each. Not 12 coffee cups of 6 ounces each. I have owned several of these pots. Use aluminum polish on the outside and wipe the inside with a vinegar soaked rag regularly.  I like a doppio-espresso with honey (double-shot). Better than Starb$cks.

Traditional Italian Espresso

When I received the shipment in a plastic mailbag, the box inside was open and not sealed! There was no manual or instructions booklet included.  It's pretty easy to figure out w/o any instructions!

Before using it, I hand washed the parts with gentle soap. Filled it with water, added the coffee strainer/filter w/o any coffee in it, put it on the stovetop, made a pretend-espresso just to clean the insides and making sure it works w/o wasting any coffee actually!

Later I tried it with coffee grounds and it produced a decent espresso. Nothing compared to real espressos prepared under bars of pressure of course. I only bought this device as a back up when my espresso machine acts up or needs repairs. 

One word of caution: I don't know what metal was used to make the device, after the first time use making espressos, the coffee chemicals interacted with the metal and the device was all discolored and no longer shiny inside!

A basic stovetop espresso maker

Coffee is great but been using only for three months and the handle broke already. Invest kn a better pot.

Thought i ordered a 9 cup but youâre lucky if you get 1. Then you need to make more just to have a second cup and the pot is so hot you canât undo it to pour water in. Very disappointed

This pot represents a scam as far as I am concerned. U may get 2 cups of coffee. Very unsatisfactory

It's one cup not 3 and when you clean it like a dye or gray tint comes out and am not ok drinking coffee from it. It's going back!
