It's all child powered and there are no pedals. You child would sit on the toy and push using his/her feet, or it can be used as a walk-behind toy (with supervision), as it has a handle in the rear.

It is not battery powered. They just sit there and act like they are driving while you push them. Their feet do not touch the ground and there are no pedals. But my son loves it!

It's basically a forward/backward toy, but if your child is like most, he/she will just pick it up and go in the other direction to "turn".

Yes it works on carpet fine! The steering isn't the best but it's great because if it turned too sharply they'd fall off. I especially like the restrictor plate in the back so it won't go fast.
