For the last week and a half it has been sub-zero, we purchased the 80 watt heater, all through those days, even at -24° with the windchill  -34°  we had water in the bird bath, not completely thawed, but plenty for our many birds to enjoy, We are very pleased

Marvelous heater

I bought this de-icer to replace one that I had for year that was made of metal and started rust. This de-icer is lightweight, easy to clean, doesn't look like it's capable of rusting, and fits below the water level of my birdbath. It's smaller than my previous de-icer, but just as powerful, so that means the birds get to enjoy more room in the birdbath! The birds seems to like it, and it is certainly keeping ice out of. Now that I see how well it works, I will be purchasing a second one of these de-icers to go with my other birdbath!

This bird bath deicer is working just great.  I especially like that it looks like a stone.  The crows have found it interesting.  It came just in time for our first snow storm and we were glad we had this item.

Bird Bath Deicer

I have bought 80W deicers for years. They don't last forever, but they serve very well for a long time - even during the POLAR FREEZE years ago. I currently have 3. During the winter I add 2 gallons to every "birdbath" every day. The animals drink a lot. Heavy duty extension cords serve well with the green tubes which protect the connections.

This thing really does the trick and this 80 watt version is much better than the 50 watt one that pooped out on us after a couple of years. It also seems to lay flatter that the other one did. The only thing that can be a problem is that our cement birdbath has an island in the middle and sometimes it's difficult to place the defroster properly.

No Ice Skates Needed By Our Birds!

I've only had this for a week but, in 20 degree temps, it keeps the water liquid. I can't tell whether the 80W size is causing evaporation or whether the birds are just using the birdbath more, but I have to refill every 2 days or so. If it lasts through the 3 year warranty period, I'll be a very happy camper.

The deicer does not work as advertised.  The claim is "the standard Ice Eliminator prevents ice buildup in baths of up to 10 gallons. For larger baths, please use the Super Ice Eliminator80 watt version is suitable."  And it claims the 80 watt works to -40 degrees.  Well in reality, its a cold last few days in the single digits and our small bird bath under 3 gallons, with the 80 watt version is mostly ice.  Immediately above the Ice Eliminator there is a small section of no ice however our expectation based on the product information at khpet.com was this product would keep the entire birdbath water from freezing.  The second issue is in less than a month of uses, the white finish is flaking off.  At least the birds have water but our expectations were higher based on the product information.

Does not work as described

I installed these two bird bath heaters (per instructions) I bought yesterday and upon inspection today they are allowing hard ice to form all around the birdbath except in the very center. Not good enough. 
I was counting on these but will return. I'll buy something else. Extremely disappointed. The reviews I read were favourable but not accurate. It is in the 20's here but this product should work. 
Don't waste your money.
