I used purified water at first and have since started to use tap water with no problems. If scale were to form it would be on the top filters which could be descaled

Yes.  It comes with a set, but requires either the Honeywell &quot;Filter B&quot; or the BestAir HumidiWick HW700.

The Honeywell &quot;Filter B&quot; or HumidiWick HW700 will both work.  The price is about the same, as is the service life. I use whatever is available and the cheapest.

tap water is perfectly fine. it works good. filling it with a pitcher of water, much like watering a house plant. Very easy!

While none of the above are necessary, there may be some advantage to using distilled or purified water.  The calcification and mineralization of the pads is the primary reason for the need to change them.  As this happens, they become dramatically less efficient.  For this same reason, spring water isn&#39;t necessarily a good idea since it often contains a goodly amount of minerals that can diminish the longevity of the pads.

Whether the cost of distilled/purified water at upwards of 3 gallons a day is offset by extended pad/filter life is debatable.

On the other hand, these humidifiers tend to conk out after a couple of winters of regular use.  Use of distilled or purified water may extend the service life since the pump will gunk up and freeze less quickly.

Honeywell Humidifier

I bought this Honeywell Humidifier because of its size and ease of use. I am particularly pleased, in addition to the above features, that this Humidifier can be easily and thoroughly cleaned as needed. 
I have purchased and tossed Humidifiers over the past years that could not be completely or thoroughly cleaned. I am not a germ-a-phobe but I am very particular about a clean humidifier that is free of mold and bacteria. 
This Honeywell Humidifier can be completely taken apart, most items washed in the dishwasher, while the tank can be thoroughly cleaned including all of the corners and edges. No pretzel acrobats needed, just two soaks with vinegar and bleach and rinsing. 
This Humidifier is not silent when operating but it is a low white noise that I don't even notice. 
This is the easiest humidifier to completely clean and that is my primary reason to recommend this Honeywell humidifier.

Great product, easy to use, easy to clean...I love that I can use it at night and fill it up like I am watering a plant. It is the best humidifier I have owned...highly recommend it!! Not too bad on price either!!

It's a quality humidifier but would work better closer to a smaller size room than a "medium" size room like it boasts, but not completely ineffective in medium size rooms. You'd just have to keep it running longer. After it runs for a while though, the output doesn't feel different between the 3 speeds. Not sure if it has to do with filter saturation.

Better for smaller rooms but OK for medium too

I use a humidifier for my daughter's allergies and my own. It works right out of the box and is the easiest to load water into. The others I've had I ALWAYS make a mess - so that top fill feature is definitely a favorite. I also really like that it has the optional demineralization cartridge as our we have hard water at home. It keeps it clean. The other got super gunky really quick. We've now been using for a week and have had no problems with it. I would definitely recommend buying this for it's reasonable price. I tested the Honeywell® TopFill Humidifier for free, but all opinions are my own.

Easy To Use Humidifier

I've used humidifiers in my bedroom for years every winter. This unit looks nice. Has a nice night light, is easy to fill, and the filters are easily accessible to clean or change. However, I have been using this one for several weeks and still wake up very dry. I run it about an hour before going to bed and then all night, so some times it may run for 9 hours and has only used about 4 cups of water. Other humidifiers I have used would use much more water during the night. It has three settings and I use it on high and have tried using it on low and medium but get less moisture at those settings

Little results for the size of the unit

The humidifier features a pump that brings water from the tank across the top (the blue plastic strip in the photo) which wets an evaporative filter. A fan blows air up through the filter to push the water into the air.

The good: easy to fill. The front has a large opening you can pour water right into. Has a fill indicator on the front, and a clearly-marked "max fill" level inside.
it creates a waterfall sound as the water that doesn't get absorbed by the filter falls back into the tank (could be bad if you don't want the water sound).

The bad: lasted two winters. The pump started to not pump the water up over the filter during Year 2 and then refused to at all in Year 3. The fan runs, but without the water, its just a noise maker.
There is a blue light that comes on when its operating. Its VERY bright, almost too bright for those (like me) who like a dark room to sleep.

Didn't last long

We were happy with this humidifier until the beginning of the second season. In the middle of the night, in our bedroom, the heating element got too hot, melted a hole in the bottom of the humidifier casing and began to melt fibers in the carpet. We do have very hard water here, and we had not yet cleaned the hard water from the element this year. But it had only been used a week or two this year. I was awake and began to smell burning and shut it off before the smoke detector kicked in. I guess I will have to go back to the type with a filter. Or maybe just put a pan of water on top of the register like we did years ago.
