You pull a little extra line out and wrap it around the plastic piece on the bottom of the housing, then snug it tight.

It locks by wrapping it once around the plastic cleat on the bottom of the spool - you can see the cleat in the photo

You wrap the line around the plastic hook jutting out the bottom of the casing for the line which tightens it.

If you haven't figured it out yet, there's a plastic thing underneath where the line comes out that it wraps around. :)

There is a hook,type bracket at the bottom. Take the slack out and curl around this bracket.

Wrap the line once aorund the bottom plastic piece, then snug any excess line back into the housing. The line is very sturdy and will not stretch.

I hung my line about 7' above ground. When it is loaded with a load of laundry (including a couple of heavy items like jeans and sweatshirs, it is about 4 to 5 feet above ground. If I had known, I would have hung the line end higher than the spool end by an extra foot. I am very happy with the line.

The line locks as tight. As you add a lot weight to it the line will start to droop but that is to be expected. My outside line is made of cotton and every time I hang clothes I have to make another loop to tighten it. I don't have to do that with this one.

Is the line locked or do the clothes touch the ground

You can stretch out just what you need. To anchor the line, you wrap it around the plastic cleat on the bottom of the spool.

No, you can extend the line out to whatever length you need. There is a catch on the bottom of the unit to wrap the line around to keep it tight.

NO.. There is a snub that you can wrap the remaining line around and make the line taut.

You can extend it as short or as long(40ft) as you want.

Our last one lasted 20 years out in the sun. If this one lasts that long, we will have to leave it our will..... ha ha

Very useful-and durable

The summer is comming, so the hot! I need to be more energy saver, and ecofriendly...Also I read the sun is a great natural desinfectant, so I want my cloth clean and desinfected. It is a great product and very resistant and easy to install.

Great energy saver

I had the same exact style of clothesline for over 15 years, but it finally broke, so I had to replace it. This one fit perfectly which made mounting it super easy.

Cut electric bill with this easy to use product

The retractable clothes line works perfectly in the basement when weather does not permit outside hanging. Easy to install and made of sturdy material. The only downside was I had to use my own screws because the ones that came with it were cheap junk. But I think that is the norm now for many ptoducts.

Easily installed. Using for drying outside, so far so good. I havent had a very heavy load on it yet & not using the full 40' of line. It works for me & my stuff & WAY cheaper than running a dryer(which broke) and was much cheaper & easier to replace(for now). Probably wont work so good in the winter time,LOL!!!

So far so good. I wish I'd thought to buy my new "solar dryer" ;) long before I did, probably could've saved big on my electricity bills. I've only used it a couple of times so far. I tried to install outside somewhere where the hail we occasionally get wouldn't damage it. It's made of plastic and I hope it will withstand not only inclement weather, but I would also think full sun would eventually break down the plastic.

This is my second one. The first one was very old and I broke it .  It is very sturdy and retractable. It will last you forever. I will not buy anything but this brand. It has paid for itself many times over!

Replacement for one that lasted for many years

This was purchased as a replacement for a worn retractable clothesline. I like that it has a metal spring hook to attach the line with, however, the line on this clothesline is much thinner than the one I am replacing. I am not sure how that is going to affect the quality as far as longevity of use. The container that holds the line when retracted isn't exactly what I expected from the picture online; it has a pinkish cast to it. I am planning to spray paint it so that it blends better.

The line sags once clothes are hung on it. When I tried to tighten the line it broke. Please don't waste your MONEY!!!

Save Your $$$

I can't express how disappointed I was with this purchase.   It is IMPOSSIBLE to hang any other than maybe handkerchiefs and underwear on this retractable clothesline - no matter how tight you try and make the line before you hang clothes on it, it still sags so much that all of your clothes are either just above the ground or touching the ground.  

I would highly suggest you spend a bit more and get a better one.  I really miss my old one, which broke after years of service.  This is NO replacement.  

I read the reviews that said as much, but didn't heed them; I hope you do!
