Better than expected or hoped for!!

I have wanted a roaster for so many years, my husband bought me this for my birthday this year. I was so WOWED by it's size. I am able to put 2 chickens in it side by side, not that I need this. It is so much bigger than I thought it would be. I can hardly wait to do a turkey or ham in it. Trust the booklet the manufacture supplied, the cooking times are right on. I hate heating my house up in the summer time, so this is great, does not heat up the house at all. If you were thinking about getting one, stop thinking and go for it!

Bought this specifically to cook our 21-pound Thanksgiving turkey. Unstuffed bird was ready in less than three hours and fit with room to spare. The skin was not crisp, but I had planned to remove it away anyway, so that was not an issue. The meat was juicy and fell off the bone. I mention this because the turkey had been in my chest freezer for three years. The metal rack works beautifully and was certainly necessary. Don't know if I would have been able to get the bird out of the roaster in one piece without it. My only concern was that the four legs supporting the roaster are VERY short, maybe half an inch, more like bumps than legs actually. I was concerned that the bottom would get so hot it might burn or discolor my countertop, so I elevated the roaster on several 4x4-inch ceramic tiles just to be on the safe side. My only problem now is where to store this thing - it is a MONSTER! Definitely recommend one to anyone looking to do a turkey while freeing up space in your regular oven for sides, rolls, pies, etc.

    • I ran mine for nearly 1/2 hour at max (450 degree) without the insert or lid on so the smoke & odor could escape. The odor was fairly strong at first and filled the kitchen then tapered off. Be sure you wash and dry both the insert pan & lid before using it. I also used warm water on paper towels and washed the interior basin and dried that with paper towels as well.

    • Yes, it does smell and smoke, but it is required in the instructions to preheat and run dry for the first time for about 15 minutes to "cure". I did this and found that it still smelled a little the second time, but very minimal.

    • 15 minutes of preheating is recommended before you place food in the unit. I noticed a smell during the preheating but is quickly went away by the time I place the turkey inside.

    • I turned the oven on with nothing inside for about 10 minutes. I think directions will tell you. It didnt smell that bad I then let it cool and washed in soapy water. Real easy to clean after baking turkey

    • Yes it does. I don't know if there's a way to cure it. The smoke/smell wasn't that bad that it bothered me.

Does this roaster brown the turkey like the oven?
    by hsharp540 12/9/2010
    • Thank you for your question. No, the roaster oven will not brown your turkey. We recommend cooking your turkey in the roaster oven first, then place it in the regular oven for 10 minutes to brown.

    • no, my turkey wasn't brown on top but I removed the pan and stuck the phone thing in the oven and it browned up really nicely.

    • No, it steams the turkey leaving it nice and moist. If you want the brown look, transfer to a 400 degree oven during the last 30 minutes of cooking. I would recommend slathering with butter before transferring.

    • No, a turkey will NOT brown in this roaster. You have to put it in the regular oven for the last 20-30 minutes for it to brown.

    • No, we put it in the regular oven for 20 minutes so it would brown the turkey. The turkey was very juicey and full of flavor.

    • Yes, it does. I would much rather cook a turkey in this roaster than in the oven.

    • No, the roaster does not brown. This does not matter to my family because we don't "present" the turkey on a table or anything. An option would be to place it in your regular oven for the last half hour so that it browns.
