You have to use one function at a time. When you are finished brewing a full pot of coffee you can make a single serve on the other side while the coffee sits in the pot. If you try to make a single serve and have enough water in it to brew a pot of coffee it will all come out and have an over flow. It works great after I brew a pot of coffee and my daughter wants a hot cocoa. You can use any brand of K cup...I even use the Keurig they are compatible as well.

No, you have to chose one side or the other. And if you leave the coffeemaker to the single serve size, the programming won't work until you switch it to brew a whole pot.

It's one or the other, but you can brew a carafe, switch to single cup and then switch back to keep the carafe warm. You can use any k-cup brand.

If you use the single serve option you have to switch to it but the burner states it will be hot on the 12 cup side per the door where the water goes into on the top.

Not all K-cup types can be used with this coffee maker. I have one kind that the coffee pot will not puncture the top. Water boils out all over the counter. You cannot fill the pot with water and then choose to brew a single cup. You have to unplug the pot and empty the water into the sink or set it to full pot mode and perk the water out. You have to fill the reservoir to either the small or large cup size. Any more and you get an "Err" message. You also have to manually set the cup holder to the appropriate size cup of get coffee splashing as the cup fills.

There is a permanent filter on the single cup side, not for pot size though.

No it will not take ALL K-cups. I got mine as a gift and it came with a big box of Victor Allen K cups. The base of the Victor Allen K cups is just a bit too wide to properly seat in the Flexbrew K cup holder. You can only use one side at a time. I have been able to use all K-cups. I find that if I use the heel of my hand to push the K-cup into the holder it snaps into place easily. Sometimes I do it the other way (pushing it in with my fingers) and the K-cup does not stay completely seated so then I take the heel of my hand and push down and all is well. Sometimes if I have had to do the latter, I find turning the K-cup a little to one side or the other and punching a new hole in the bottom works.  I love this machine. I get out of the single side, what I pour into it. I don&#39;t get shorted a 1/4 cup.

There is a small mesh filter for the one cup side. For the coffee pot side you still need to use filters
