I put mine out and had a cooperhead in it. He had gotten in to eat the minnows at low tide, and was too fat to get back out. He was dead after high tide can in.

We used this trap to catch a medium size cottonmouth. See our review. Once a couple of minnows were caught the snake couldn't pass it up. Worked great!

about an inch, if you are looking to catch some crawdads to eat you will need to simply take some wire snips and snip out the ring, takes about 3 minutes tops to do both ends.

We bought minnow trap to capture a water moccasin snake living in our pond. With a six year old child living here we could not allow the snake to continue living there; much less a predator continuing to eat our fish. Within two days of putting the minnow trap in the pond and after the trap snared a couple of minnows the snake couldn't help but get snared itself. Objective accomplished. Thank you for the reasonable price and the quick delivery.

A minnow trap that did the job

I ordered 2 different traps, one for a gift and one to keep. This is the one I chose to keep because it fit together nicer than the other one (which was the more expensive one). Great value!

Fit together nicely

If you buy minnows at a bait shop this trap will pay for its self after a couple of fishing outings.
Put some rolled up bread in it and your ready to catch tiny/small fish.
(you will need to supply string or rope to attach to the cage)

It Works

Although there are all of the ways to make a Minnow Trap posted on YouTube, I decided to purchase this one because the price was so good and it looked like it would last for a long time.
Because it is almost impossible to buy minnows after the summer is over, I wanted to be able to use minnows during the colder months. I have used his trap twice and it worked like a charm. I put white bread in it and sunk it by the boat dock for just an hour and had over 2 dozen minnows. If you like to fish with minnows and are unable to get them in the fall or winter, this is the answer!
I read that using foam packing peanuts works just as well as bread, I will try that the next time I get any of them in a package.

Great Product, Good Value

I got this trap as an early Easter present from my parents, and i tried crackers for the first two days with no luck. So i tossed in a hotdog and threw it in an overflow area in my creek. The next day i got 3 baby chubs and 2 baby sunfish. The trap is a lot bigger then you might imagine, larger then a football, and the holes to enter the trap are fairly big to so i get minnows normally around 2 inches long which is pretty good since I expected the trap to be tiny and to catch little 3 cm long fish. The trap is very sturdy and easy to take apart and put back together, it has a rust proof plastic around all the metal which is an added bonus. I would recommend this to anyone who fells like catching minnows. My purpose was to put them in a new pond I hand dug. Overall it is an excellent trap and it is extremely affordable while keeping sturdy quality.

We were moving our pond fish from the pond to the aquarium for the winter. We did not think to buy a trap until we were down to the last few fish. Wish we had this from the start! Made catching the remaining fish much easier.

Very useful trap

Needed minnow traps to stock a pond with some forage fish. Getting a good start. I bought three to try in a stream, liked them, and bought five more. They need to be tended daily. I found that baiting them makes a big difference. After rain events they collect silt, which is quickly removed by plunging them up and down a few times in the stream. Good trap.

Came quickly and the price was great. I bought two of these to actually use as snake traps, not their intended function but from reading online, I found others had used similar ones for this task. The opening on each end is about 7/8 inch and has a smooth ring welded in so the mesh isn't sharp. The mesh is all encased/dipped in black plastic so I presume this should help with it's longevity and perhaps also make it less visible or disturbing to whatever you intend. The 2 halves fit together easily; one side just has a loop/post that interlock, and the other side has double loops that you hold together with the spring clamp and line tie off. This clamp is a bit awkward and difficult to squeeze, especially if you don't have strong hands. The two halves didn't align perfectly when I first assembled, the circles had gotten a little wonked out of shape, but I could easily flex them to match each other and not leave gaps when closed. NOW, as far as being a snake catcher...  I had some Northern Water Snakes take up residence in my koi pond. Didn't want to harm them or my fish, just relocate them. The trap openings probably won't work for real big snakes, but the ones I had were babies and a momma (I guess) that was like a large garter snake size. I modified the openings by using the bottom half section of a clear plastic cup fastened onto the inside of the opening cone with zip ties. The very bottom of the cup was cut with a razor knife into a star pattern and the tabs pushed inward to the trap. This made openings that the snake could still enter easily but would be much harder to get out than the standard smooth holes it came with. The trap was set into my shallow end where they were hunting fish/frogs and in less than a week I had captured the momma and one of the babies, the other baby was caught with a dip net. Didn't use any bait, though the trap was half submerged and a few of my koi/goldfish fry would go into the trap as well. Maybe that helped? The attached photo shows when I was releasing it, gives a sense of scale (hah!) and you can see the modified entry cups a little. Good luck!

Built well, I used to catch snakes.

This is what I've been looking for and WalMart needs to keep them in better stock.  It has been over 6 months that I went into my local store and they were ALWAYS out of them! they need to keep a better stock of them for people.  other than that I am glad I FINALLY got ome.  I love the item.

This trap replaced an old rusted one that we use in saltwater. It closes tightly enough to keep minnows inside, and it's just the right size for our small dock. We'll see how long the vinyl coating lasts, but at this price, we won't mind buying a new trap. Walmart's online shopping service made the purchase easy.

It kinda does the job but obviously no quality control--doesnt line up proper to close and when closed there are sizable gaps since it doesnt line up proper--little minnows can just swim out easy--have to fight with it--you get what you pay for
