I leave mine plugged in all the time next to my stove. The burners themselves have a dial for temp. control, that is how you turn it on and off.

Power goes to the burners from a knob style dial. Each burner has a knob dial....from low to high. If the unit is plugged in a center 'blue' light is lit...
When each burner is used a red light appears near the burner used.
As the unit warms up the light remains on until it reaches the temperature you want on the dial. It then goes off and when it cools past that temp the light come on as heat is added to the burner again.
The smaller burner will boil small amounts of water.

No, it doesn't stay on all the time. There is a knob for each burner that allows you to adjust the temp from Low-High and also turns it on and off.

No it does not have an on/off switch. It just has the knobs that you turn to the right to turn on to your desired temperature (usually all the way to the right) or turn back left to turn off. There will be a red light that turns on indicating that the burner is on, hot. Also when it is plugged into the electrical outlet it will have a blue light on in the middle. I always unplug it to be safe as the knobs are really easy to turn.

I can boil rice just fine on the big burner then put it on the small burner to simmer. I've sautéed many things, fried steaks, but haven't tried frying chicken because the manual said "not for frying". Then I read some reviews that said it works well for frying, so I'll give it a try. Not sure if the length of time to fry chicken is okay, but will see. Other than that, I'm very pleased.

It can get water hot to a boil it might take a little bit but not bad. I recently used it at first it gave a little tiny smell, but it stopped after second use. It fits perfectly where I wanted it to fit. I already made a couple meals out of it. So for first appartment works awesome. I already recommend it to a few of my friends there going to be buying it. Thanks again Walmart great product!

My kitchen is more of a kitchenette. It was set up for gas (which I didn't turn on because of cost).

I have been using this as my cooktop for two years. It boils in minutes. It does everything a real cooktop does.

Amazing

Will not heat high enough for water to reach full boil, so cannot cook pasta or rice. Food becomes waterlogged and gummy, but not cooked. Will fry and saute, heat canned foods, etc.

Will Not Boil Water

This cooktop is good for cooking eggs, canned food, etc. Things that you don't need high heat. Tried to boil water for pasta and it never came to a boil. It doesn't get as hot as it was advertised. Would not buy again.

Thought it would be worth for cooking but it takes forever. It's good for slow cooking other than that will take about 30 minutes or longer to start boiling water which is ridiculously slow. Don't expect it to cook hamburger helper as quickly as the box says, will not happen.

Useless

It's only good for sautéing.  Takes forever to heat up, thermostat prevents from getting to hot, boiling  is a  rare event.  Save your money.
