The digital number is battery voltage or Alternator output voltage. The normal range for a battery is 12.2V to 13.2 V : and for alternator is around 13.4 V to 14.8 V.

In a healthy 12 volt system, this is the alternator's charging voltage applied to your battery, engine running. This is a typical/normal charge rate. Not an expert here, but most alternators seem to deliver 13.2 - 13.9 volts. This restores your battery (+-) very close to 12 volts. For an easy/pure battery readout, turn engine off, rotate ignition key to accessory (acc). Headlights, stereo system, etc. should be turned off for an accurate value.

What does the digital number reading mean?

Sorry for the delay in this answer, but we wanted to be sure to address all of your concerns in as much detail as possible.
It is not unusual for alternators and voltage regulators to vary in output readings. If the engine rooms' temperature is lower than 77 degrees Fahrenheit - alternators and voltage regulators may raise the charging voltage a little higher than 14.8 V. In that case, that fluctuation should be considered normal. If the reading stayed higher, consistently at or above 14.8V no matter idle or higher speed driving - then you would have a problem.
Check with your vechicles' user manual - or contact Pontiac for specific or different alternator charging voltage ranges for future reference.

Puzzling behavior of the Alternator Warning LED?

Yes. Problems could occur at any time - so it would be wise to have the monitor operational. It does not draw significant power from the battery.

Great little monitor, and so easy to use. Just plug it into a cigarette lighter socket or power point on any regular 12v car/truck/...
With the ignition on and the engine off, it will show your battery voltage (anything below 12v means your battery is starting to go bad). With the engine on, it will show you your alternator output (if it shows below 13v then your alternator is starting to go bad). If everything shows good and your car is slow to crank over, then your battery cable connection is dirty. It also has red leds to help with the diagnosis.  Everyone in my family has one in their car now.

A must have to monitor your 12 volt car battery.
The battery LED lights at around 11.9 volts to indicated that the battery is not fully charged. The LED charging indicator will light when the alternator is not working or when the engine is not running.

Works Great

Of three monitors purchased six months ago, two are working fine in a motor home. One was returned after failing immediately. This happens, expectations score suffered. The two in service have been subjected to constant use, days at a time. Plus, a one month trip where they never shut down. I checked their accuracy with a pro-meter, they are exact.

Between three batteries, an alternator, a converter/inverter and onboard generator, these bold displays have delivered correct voltage ranging from 8.5 to 13.9 volts. This value can change widely from moment to moment, depending on system in use/condition of batteries. I did not think they would hold up to rugged use, am very impressed. Highly recommended.

Why are there no instructions with this, and should you leave it pluged in all the time?

Great product

great volt meters when a semi perm. installation is needed- voltage will vary about 10% between
two of same volt meters. This wasn't a problem in my case. I used two in a motor home to see voltage for the coach batt. and chassis batt. They worked well in this application.

I purchased this product at my local Wal-Mart store during the afternoon as a replacement for an Equus Innova 3721 Battery and Charging System Monitor.

The displayed numbers on this product are big and bright; the indicator LEDs seem to operate properly; and the cord is long enough to access the cigarette lighter, but not so long as to get snagged.

I cleaned a place on the dashboard with alcohol, mounted the display, routed the cable, and plugged the product into the cigarette lighter of my 2004 F350 SuperDuty pickup truck. The next morning, the display was on the carpet; the mounting tape failed to hold the display. I replaced the mounting tape with a 1" square of Scotch Outdoor Mounting Tape and remounted the display—problem solved. When driving at night and during daytime, the display is readable. At night, the LED in the cigarette lighter plug is a distraction; I covered the LED with black electrical tape. Thus far, the product seems to work properly.

Given the adhesive and plug LED issues, I give this product a "C" rating. That is, the product seems to work, but I had to fiddle with it to make it work. For the price, product installation should be a one-time affair; product operation should be flawless for the life of the vehicle.
