Dell officially states this Inspiron 14R as having a tested charge of:

6 cell Up to 5 hours and 32 minutes
9 cell Up to 11 hours and 6 minutes

These numbers are going to be maximum times, naturally. The reason why it is tough to give an exact time is because each time the laptop is used, you are placing different demands on it and this changes the total battery life for that charge. Operating time is significantly reduced when you perform operations including, but not limited to, the following:

Using DVD, DVD-R, and CD-RW drives
Using wireless communications devices, PC Card™ devices, or USB devices
Using high-brightness display settings, 3D screen savers, or other power-intensive programs such as 3D games
Running the computer in maximum performance mode

Working off a fully charged battery you have a little over 2 hours.

Battery life is ok, It last me about an 1h and 45 mins to 2 hrs browsing.

I've gotten 4.5 to 5 hours on one charge of the battery

Most of the Dell systems will by default come with Office 2010 Starter for Windows 7 on them. This package includes ad-supported versions of Word and Excel. To upgrade to more robust versions of the software, you can either purchase a retail disc (which costs more but you can use on more PCs) or you can purchase an Office Product Key (which is cheaper yet can only be used for that single PC). The software is already installed on the laptop, but purchasing the Product Key or installing from the retail disc unlocks the software and opens up the necessary programs that you paid for. This cannot be done and preinstalled before purchase of the Dell system. Once you get the system in your hands it only takes a few minutes to activate it via the Product Key and open up all your Office applications you paid for. FYI, the Dell Inspiron 14R you based this question from is a special package that comes with Office Home and Student already.

I would say choose the one that will work for your needs. Business or Professional would probably have uses for a business owner. If you are just going to use it for personal or school use, the home & student would probably be sufficient. Hope this helps.

mine came with a code for microsoftoffice student and home 2010, no software, pre installed. i have word, excel, powerpoint and onenote. i suggest getting this laptop. not too big, not small. a great size and does work wonderfully.

Other computers come with a partial version of the Microsoft Office programs like Word and Excel. This computer came with the full version of Word and Excel pre-installed. All that was needed was to register the programs with Microsoft and I was able to access the features.

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 is preloaded. You will receive a number to load it on your computer. I am completely satisffied with it.
