I have been a fan and user of DAWN for many years. I always have it available. It's good for a multitude of cleaning jobs. Gentle enough to wash oily hair and skin-- tough enough to soak baked on food in a casserole dish. Small drops make a good non bleaching/non fading laundry soap for light to moderately dirty clothing. Scrub the dog or your vehicle tires! Rinses well-- easily if you don't use to much. Still prefer the -regular- non ultra formula for some things, but this works equally well. AND it really does work well as a shampoo without burning the eyes if used in small amounts. I always coupon shop this product in a store as a rule but did try a grocery order with Walmart .com during a bad weather spell... delivery to the door of some heavy cleaning items was a treat and very fast. Dawn has a low, non lingering fragrance for those who hate scent clinging in their clothing. I guess you can tell I like the product-- for 30 plus years I suppose!

Bought this with the thought of less recycling. Would like to see Walmart carry this item in the one gallon size.

I've been using Dawn for probably 25 or so years. I use to buy the cheap detergents until I got a free sample of dawn. I've been sold on Dawn since! Cuts through the grease, just like it states! Even when I drain the grease from ground beef into the sink, I just squirt a bit of dawn in the drain and run hot water through and no grease clogs. For a liquid hand-soap, I put some dawn in a pump bottle, dilute it with water and add a few drops of bleach. Works great for cleaning car grease off of the hands too! Squirt some full strength dawn in the hands, rub it in good and then wet, lather and rinse. Recently, I was about to run out and bought a cheap bottle of generic, I did more dishes using what was in the cap from the dawn then I did from 3 oz of the generic.

I need products that are safe for septic systems
by Kathie 1/15/2013
  • I have used Dawn about 30 years + or -. It is excellent for many uses & recently I have started using it more like a prewash for my hair) before using my Paul Mitchell shampoo & conditioner. It helps get out the build up from dust from cat litter & or when I am not able to wash my hair daily do to injury. Giving my hair a deeper cleansing. ( I have very long blonde hair) (so gets dirty fast & shows dirt) I also have used a little bit in my drains especially the kitchen sink every so often a little with hot water & have never had any problems through the years with drains getting plugged up from any grease build up or other. I was advised to use it for some kittens I had taken in the pregnant mom who had litter & they all had or had gotten fleas, since the kittens were smaller & were too small to actually be able to bathe, I put a little Dawn (regular only) in a bucket of warm water then made a bucket of warm rinse water. just dipped them in both( first the soapy water then the rinse, ( only a little squirt or so of Dawn) not their heads though it helped get rid of the fleas that was on them. I like Dawn better than other dish soaps & though they now have many scents I still find the original is the best for grease cutting etc. I use a little clorox in my water for dishes with it though I have noted & tried the other Dawn with bleach but still liike he regular better & just adding my own bleach as needed ..I like Dawn regular most for getting out grease from oven dishes. or from deep fryer when cleaning & changing cooking oils from fries or other fried foods. As far as septics I really can't see how it can do any more harm than all the other stuff going into the waters & drains or garbage disposals, toilets. I sometimes use Dawn regular or ultra (the blue) a little in the toilet to clean the toilet bowl. Works great. Less harmful for toilets than the toilet cleaners. My daughter buys other scents for the hands & dishes & I have tried some but I don't like t as well for my dishes as the regular or ultra blue. Hope this helps some one.. Gloria USA

  • Don't know of any damage Dawn would cause your system. Be sure the bacteria are taken care of. Pump it out if it needs to be. Remember, if it aint organic, it aint going anywhere!

  • DAWN is so mild it certainly should not hurt a septic system. I have washed my hair with Dawn for 30+ years--- I still have a full head of hair! Pet pooch loves it too and the non bleach brands should not hurt any drain system--- and being such a good grease dissolver it should help.

  • I've used it with septic systems and had no problems. It is bio-degradable, contains no phosphates.

  • The bottle does not say if it is or isn't but I have a septic and it has not harmed it, as far as I know. It also says on the bottle that it contains biodegradable surfactants.

  • Hi, Kathie. Normal, recommended amounts do not disturb the septic system or damage plumbing systems with a properly functioning septic system. Hope this helps! Kim

  • The absolute best dishwasher detergent there is .. is Finish Gel Packets. They were recommended to me by someone in the isle shopping one day. I have always like the liquid Finish for my dishwasher but could only find the powder tablets or the Gel packs. She pointed out the package actually says - Do not recommend washing your dishes first. - Well, I have been basically doing that for years just to make sure my dishes are spotless. So, I tried them and now will never use anything else! I have put stuck on cheese, stuck on dry cat food, EVERYTHING in the dishwasher and they come out spotless! As a matter of fact, if you do tend to wash your stuff first, it comes out with a white film all over it... so no more washing first, then loading the dishwasher - quick rinse... load... run.. and DONE! Love it!!!!

  • pinky-- this DAWN product is for ---hand washing--- of dishes in the sink-- not an automatic dish washer. you will have massive suds problems in a machine!! you can use this in a regular washing machine for clothing-- but just a few drops at a time as you will get lots of suds!! IF you ever get too many suds-- just add a bit of fabric softener to the water and agitate and the suds will reduce. DAWN is a wonderful mild cleaner-- but NOT meant for an automatic dish washer machine.

  • Hi Pinky. Dawn is meant for hand dish washing only, and will not work in a dishwasher. I recommend Cascade Dishwashing Detergent. We have several versions available in powder, gel and pac form. Here's some links to take a look at those. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cascade-Platinum-Fresh-Scent-Dishwasher-Detergent-Pacs-23-count-13.7-oz/24286970 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cascade-Lemon-Scent-Powder-Dishwasher-Detergent-120-oz/17195128 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cascade-Dishwasher-Dish-Detergent-Lemon-9.68-lb/12166506
