I believe the bobbin tension needs to be adjusted. I had that problem as well on my singer, and changing the bobbin tension fixed the problem.

Your thread isn't threaded properly. I know it sounds condescending but I had to deal with this too. Check to be sure you have a fresh needle the right size for your fabric. Use a pipe cleaner to brush out all the fuzz. Pay attention to your thread making sure it passes between those two tight metal plates on the top far right before bringing it down to the front. The best thread I have found is coats and coats all purpose. Clean out your bobbin area. Set the tension back to 4 and try again with scrap fabric. It's unlikely that it is the machine. You just need to get to know it.

If you are having looping on the top of the fabric, this generally means that there is an issue in the bobbin area. Please check the bobbin and make sure it is well wound. It should be installed in the bobbin case so that it turns counter-clockwise in the bobbin case. Also, clean the bobbin area of any excess thread and lint. Change the needle making sure to use a 14 needle.

yes, when you select the stitch it shows the letter which is etched on the different feet.

Yes, it will have a letter on the screen telling you what presser foot to use and the presser foot will have a Letter on it.

I bought this machine when the one I had finally gave up (Was also a brother!)  I was worried that it would be too high tec for me... But, was so very easy to use... Everything from threading to filling the bobbins!  I was in the middle of making a quilt when my old machine needed to be replaced, so, I threaded my new machine and finished it, now Ive been nonstop playing with all the features. I can't put into words how easy this machine is to use!!  Attached is pic of my quilt I made for my husband who drives a truck its made from denim and flannel. Weighing 14 pounds! Can't wait to start another my next project!

I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest.
I was FINALLY able to get a sewing machine this year and I am very pleased with my Brother 130-Stitch Sewing and Quilting Machine, SQ9185 thus far. I have several projects waiting for a machine, but since it was a long, long time ago when I last sewed on a machine, I started with a basic and made matching sci-fi themed bandannas for my family—great for camping! They were easy to sew a hem upon, so I took the next step and tried my hand at a reversible bib for a friend’s niece. I used the monogramming function to add the baby’s name to the bib’s tie. It worked well, but I will need to get a pair of sharper thread cutters to make the letters look crisp by closely trimming the extra thread between the letters. Pictured is this reversible bib, although after the picture was taken I did add a stitch about ¼ inch along the edge to tidy the bib up a tad.  Since this bib, I have made some quilted bibs. After watching a video on how to attach the walking foot, it was fairly easy to attach this foot and sew along the quilted bib as needed. I have also made a blanket, 2 pillows, and a skirt. (Remember, I mentioned I had a lot of projects lined up!) The wide table was not only quick to attach, but very steady as well. It really helped when sewing the blanket.

Pros:
Easy to use.
Easy to follow instructional DVD.
Easy for a beginner but has plenty of functions and options for a beginner to move to master.
Clear bobbin cover makes keeping an eye on the bottom thread a breeze.
Quick needle threading with the needle threader.
Walking foot makes very smooth stitches.
The monogram function is easy to program and the letters come out nicely.
The wide table is very sturdy.

Cons:
Fabric tends to pull to one side a bit, but I am still new to sewing machines. This very well may be operator error.

All-in-all, so far, I would say this is a great sewing machine for the beginners and the experienced alike!

I am a passionate quilting/sewing rookie and brother makes it easier with all the bells and whistles included for the price. I've completed my first throw quilt from piecing, quilting and binding on my brother. I love the needle threader, my vision isn't what it once was. I love the drop in bobbin. I do wish it had a bigger throat area for the machine quilting, but it's like driving a luxury car compared to my first sewing machine.

Great machine for the price

I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest.  I absolutely love my Brother SQ9185 sewing machine!  I have sewn for many years and  I like this sewing machine as much as the expensive one I had for years before it died!  When I was deciding which sewing machine to purchase, I borrowed my mother-in-laws Brother sewing machine and loved it.  I chose this model machine because of the large selection of stitches and because I could sew garments and also do quilting.  I like that I have a choice to stop sewing with the needle still in the fabric or in a raised position.  I also like the clear bobbin cover.  In my old machine I could not see when I was running out of thread in my bobbin.  The clear bobbin cover allows me to see when I need to add thread to the bobbin and also see if the thread is in the right position for sewing.  The manual that comes with this sewing machine is great!  It is so easy to find the solution to an issue.  I also like that this sewing machine is so light.  It sews like a heavy duty machine but is very easy to carry.  I sew a lot for my grandchildren & I am always working on a special project for them.  I made this dress for one of my granddaughters.  She picked out the fabric and also chose which colors & items to embroidery & smock on the dress.  This is one of her favorite dresses & it fits her perfectly!  I purchased this fabric at Walmart.

I love my Brother SQ9185

I purchased this machine while working on a quilt. It was quilt as you go and in some places there were 15 layers of fabric to sew. This machine passed with flying colors. I used almost every feature. Yes the feed dogs appear they are not coming back up after free motion quilting but they do. The tension is controlled by sliding the thread between two metal plates on the far right before bringing it down to the front of machine. I replaced the needle a few times but it wasn't the machines fault. The semi auto threader works great. I own another brother but felt it was cheaper to purchase this one than have it serviced. Even the quilt shop owners can't find a reliable dealer to service their machines. I was already familiar with an auto threader and understood what the machine was trying to do. This version is better than the complete auto. I have been sewing/quilting for 36 years. This machine is willing if you are.

Passed my test

I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest. After much debating and research, I chose the Brother SQ9185 model over a similar Singer brand machine.  I put the question up for review in my online quilting group  and true to the group's overwhelming high opinion of Brother machines, this Brother has proven itself to be a workhorse and handles my sewing binges with the quality you would expect from a high end machine.  I love the high inner curve on the machine's body and the extended work table that gives just that extra space you need when working with large or bulky projects.  Also, discovering that this fabulous machine has an needle up and down position button was the icing the cake!  I'm looking so forward to using the monogramming feature to personalize my work and make it even more special.  I am one happy doll maker and quilter!
