there a number of different inside or outside brackets(metal , that come with screws) one could buy.often called L brackets.They usually come with too small of screws depth wise so picking up longer one is a good idea.Also recommend painting if needed before installing.Drill a smaller than screw hole (pilot) first if you can.If not making a starter hole with a nail can help.

I would not use this as a bench. Its sturdy, but not enough for adults to sit on safely... that is just my opinion

You would have to drill holes along the inside of the side panels for the wooden dowels. Probably could be done.

Yes by not installing one of the shelves; but one cube opening would be twice as big as the other and the holes where wooden dowls go to insert shelf would show on the inside

The sides are pre-drilled for 3 compartments, but I suppose you could drill your own holes to make 2 compartments. I don't know what, if anything, this would do to the stability of the organizer.

Yes, but if you want the two compartments of equal size, you'd need to drill some holes in precisely the right locations. I imagine the strength would be a bit less, too.

It might be able to stack that way but I don't think it would be terribly sturdy. Maybe if you used a bracket to connect the two? and maybe anchor it to the wall while you're at it.

Probably -- depending on what you wanted to use them for, they seem heavy enough to rest stably on top of each other; but if you wanted to secure them with screws, they would have to be very long screws because the sides and tops are two inches thick so we're talking 4 inches thick when combining th two cabinets -- very very stury in this regard

Yes. This is the way I used it, but to improve stability, from my perception, I placed the bottom unit against the baseboard and the top unit a little further back, against the wall. They are in a walk-in closet, so the 1/2-inch of so different in the from center does not matter to me.
