A fun and very useful appliance!

I received this as an early Christmas present and I have had so much fun with it! It makes excellent rice, much better than my stove-top efforts. I do believe that rinsing the rice is one key to great rice. I've had less browning on the bottom when the rice was well rinsed. Other than plan rice (I mainly use Jasmine) I have used it to cook Jambalaya and to steam chicken and sausage. I have also baked a cake in it, and have included a photo of the finished product. (recipe came from the Aroma website) I just followed the directions on the box for a vanilla cake mix, poured it directly into the rice bowl and used the "white rice" setting. I checked the cake and it wasn't done so I pressed "white rice" once more. After that it was finished and came out light and spongy. I later tried a chocolate cake mix in which I added a box of chocolate pudding mix and an extra egg, as I do when I bake a cake in the oven. That was a mistake as it took *way* too long to cook - over 2 hours. But still, it turned out fine and everyone loved it. There were some odors in the rubbery seal that lingered after cooking the jambalaya, but they did not seem to permeate anything else I've done it it. I just read a tip to put a box of baking soda in the cooker when it's not in use to absorb odors and I plan to try that. All in all I'm very happy with this product. I think for a "fuzzy logic" rice cooker the price is excellent. It seems very well made and sturdy and I love the black and stainless steel design.

I have owned many rice cookers. Aroma seems to make the best ones at reasonable price. This one is much better than the Oster rice cooker (I paid $32 at Macy's) which does not cook rice properly (compared to this one) and died after 2 years. Overall I am happy with all the features it has and simple operation. I will try the brown rice next time.

Excellent Cooker! Best I've Ever Owned!

I like the fact I can choose what kind of rice I want it to cook. I mainly use the brown rice button. Sure it scorches a little but I don't mind that at all. To me it makes the rice better. It does not burn the rice. I use Jasmine Brown Rice. I normally fill it to capacity. It comes out about 1.5" from the top. No steam over spill on the top either. I love the side draining cup for condensation. I agree it is a challenge to clean the lid as it's not removable and it has the permanent silicone seal. With a little scratcher & dish soap it comes clean. P.S. Thanks Dad for ruining my old Ge cooker by pouring the rice in it without the black liner LOL! I love this logic cooker. If you want great brown rice! Get this Cooker already.

Can it cook 1 cup (dry) rice? Does it have a minimum amount that you need to make?

    • I don't know if there is a minimum but I make 1 cup (dry) rice all of the time for my husband's lunches.

    • The minimum amount most rice cookers can prepare is 2 cups (360mL) dry. This appliance follows that standard.

    • Using its own measuring cup (180 ml, really 2/3 cup), it will cook one dry cup, resulting in two cups of cooked rice. I do it all the time.

    • No there is no minimum you can cook. I would suggest at least 5 cups. I just put the left over in the fridge. You should be able to store it for up to a week in a sealed container

    • The minimum according to the manual is 2 cups of raw rice. This is the amount I usually cook. Considering it does a great job for 2 cups, you can try with 1 cup.

Is it comparable to stove top cooking Brown Rice?
    by Kessa 7/24/2010
    • About three times as long as for white rice. There is a guide in the manual.

    • Rice is rice no matter how you cook it it would take the same time. I use white rice extra long and takes about 30 minutes to be ready. The same with brown rice or rice with beans... yes, I cook rice with beans there too! I hope that helps.

    • Brown rice takes 100-105 minutes for 2 cups and 125-130 minutes for 10 cups according to the manual. AS to if it's comparable with stove-top cooking, I would say no. Brown rice on the bottom on the pan tends to scorch.

    • The same time you would cook it on top of the stove. The more rice you have the longer you cook it. I cook a full pot and it takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. You could cook it longer if you wanted to.

    • Not removable and needs to be wiped clean. And since it isn't non-stick, it is a bit of a pain to clean the lid, especially around the steam vent.

    • The lid is not removable. It can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. There is a steam vent on the inside that needs to be removed after use and washed.

    • The top lid is not removable. I just wipe it clean every time I'm done cooking. I also observed that only condensation collects on the lid and no starch water, so its easy to clean.

    • No this top lid is not removable nor is the silicone seal. It is tricky cleaning it but I don't mind taking the extra time. I just use a scrubber a little dish soap. Then I wet a paper towel with water to wipe rinse it off. I suggest putting a paper towel inside the cooker if you have the liner out to catch any drips. You don't want to get the inside wet without the liner in it.
