No. But AT&amp;T will not unlock this device, so you will be forced to use their service plans and network.

You do not have to have a contract to use this device, but AT&amp;T has locked it to their service and towers. A XBox 360, PS4 or other modern gaming system eats a lot of bandwidth. I would advise having an unlimited dataplan if you want to &quot;cut the cable&quot; and go totally cell/wireless for those situations. AT&amp;T no longer sells their unlimited plan (on or off contract). Any AT&amp;T data plan off contract will be too little data and too expensive to use for gaming/video streaming/etc.

Item works as expected

I had this item through AT&T, after 15 months it stopped working. Warranty was up but still had 9 months on conttact. Was cheaper to go to Walmart and buy this then terminate my contract. Just installed my Sim from other unit into this one. Make sure you get 2yr warranty with Walmart cause AT&T only offer 1yr direct from them

Hotspot replacement

I bought this because our family plan with 6G's don't last all month. I figured the 2G would be enough. Well my daughter left her wifi on and it used up the 2G in about 4 hours. I was ecstatic to say the least. Its a good thing if you have a good service connection where you're using it.

I received my hotspot on Saturday , Dec. 19, 2015. On. Monday, I activated the hotspot paying the $ 25.00 payment for my service. The abgentassure me that I would have service. On Wednesday, I attempted to access the Internet using my ipad and laptop but was unable to do so. I called Att. After speaking witg a couple of young representatives, i was told that Wal- mart fail to scannmy hotspot gefore shipping it. Thus, it appears to seem as stolen! Then I spokewith Holly Decker of Att. Shesaid that I must send my receipt tp Att to resolve this issue. I am very dissatisfied with this situation. I am parked at a library doing this review!
